He married 4th Feb 1928 (aged 45 bachelor Gen Labourer) Florence Atkins (aged 31 spinster) address on marriage cert for both, Fernley Cottages, Croxley Green, Watford UK. Can't trace William James Corbett being born on UK BMD or on any census records prior to his emigration. We know that William James and Florence emigrated to USA New York in Sep 1928. Some of their children remained in the UK namely James Arthur Corbett b. 1922 Watford (from Florence's previous relationship) and Alyssum Betty Corbett b. Q1 1928 Watford. Children named Lillian Malone Corbett b. 1919 baptised Croxley Green 1919, Nellie Corbett b. 1924 Watford and Maud Corbett b. 1926 Watford all went to the USA with their parents. They had four more children in the USA namely (*). William James sponsor in the USA was WH Spurrier his cousin. Any help to ascertain Wm Jas birthplace or anything about the family in the USA would be much appreciated.

On the 1927 and 1928 Electoral Register
Address - 12 Springfield Street, Polling District - Croxley Green, Parish - Rickmansworth
Corbitt James William
Corbitt, Florence
-
Are you sure all the people mentioned in your post are deceased, including the children born after 1928?
-
On the 1923 Electoral Register there is a -
James Corbett, 1 Gonville Avenue, Polling District - Croxley Green, Parish of Rickmansworth
-
William is listed as James W. on the passenger list. The 2nd page lists his cousin W.H. Spurrier living in Bronx, New York, but there is an address written in beneath that in Montgomery, Orange County, New York.
The family appears to be in Newburgh, Orange Co., New York for the 1940 census with the father listed as James.
-
A James Corbett is at 27 Gonville Avenue on the 1925 Register and in 1926 both James Corbett and Florence Corbett are at that address.

I found an obituary for Maude, who passed away earlier this year. I will send it to you via PM. It mentions that she is survived by at least two of her sisters, so I will remove the names of her younger siblings from the above post.
-
There is a very brief video of Maude interviewed in an airport in 2017. https://ny1.com/nyc/queens/news/2017/01/8/local-passengers-return-from-ft-lauderdale-hollywood-airpo

The 1928 travel record has "Worcester" as James W Corbett's place of birth - Florence born "Aberavon"

Thankyou everybody for your help. This is absolutely amazing, so much to go at. So interesting and lots of pointers

From the marriage certificate - what is the name of his father and his father's occupation?
-
There are parts of the NY death index from the 1940's that are rather illegible, but there is transcription of an entry that says William J. Cornett, died 11 Jan. 1943 at age 60. No town is listed, and I can't read it looking at the image, but it looks like the surname could be Corbett.

I didn't notice it before, but it is written in on the top of this card "Deceased January 1943".

[/quote]
His father was called John Lockley Corbett - we think occupation is 'retired' but it also looks a bit like 'artist' - he was deceased at time of his son's wedding in 1928.
The groom's occupation is 'General Labourer'

Children named Lillian Malone Corbett b. 1919 baptised Croxley Green 1919
Can you please point me to this birth & baptism

Marriages Jun 1918 (>99%)
Atkins Florence Malone Watford 3a 1491
Malone Daniel J Atkins Watford 3a 1491
So..Florence wasn’t a spinster in 1928?
Where are Florence & Lilian Malone/Atkins/Corbett in 1921?
I can see Daniel went back to Australia. Was Florence supposed to follow him?

They went out to Australia as Florence and "Lily" return from Sydney in March 1922 - onward address c/o Mrs Mack, Fernley Cottage, Croxley Green [Added - think this is Florence's mother. She can be found as stepdaughter in a Mack household in 1901. Indexed as Hack on Ancestry]
Can't find an outward journey, but maybe why they can't be found on 1921?
-
Florence's mother was Rose Alice Hack, formerly Atkins, nee Harding - married to Arthur as a widow in 1900.
The Hacks are still in Croxley Green in 1939 - with a very interesting young man with them
-
What's interesting is that Florence is clearly pregnant with James Arthur when she comes back from Australia and yet his birth is registered as a Corbett not a Malone
-
Given his place of birth on his immigration reord, I wonder if this is William's navy record
William James Corbett
Birth 1 Sep 1883, Worcester
[Ancestry index says Worcester Is, Exmouth but the immge reads Worcester, and underneath TS Exmouth, as in Training Ship - another record can be found for him on that ship]
First Service Date 16 May 1899
First Ship Served On Impregnable
Last Service Date 17 Feb 1919
Last Ship Served On Discoverer
Service Number 204538
he appears to have left and joined the reserves in 1913, then went back in the next year at the start of hostilites, being demobbed in 1919
-
Two dates of birth
Navy record 1 September 1883
WW2 US draft card 1 June 1883
-
His Training Ship Exmouth record suggests his year of birth is 1885.
-
Once again, thank you everyone for these amazing revelations. That James Arthur was probably a Malone is quite remarkable and moves the goalposts somewhat. Yes we thought Florence could not have been a spinster at time of her marriage in 1928 so her connection with Daniel came as an eye opener. Thank you for details of William James Corbett's naval record which I have now managed to find on ancestry with your help. Still can't find him being born in Worcester abt. 1883 or 1885, or on a census prior to his naval days.

I'm not sure if James Arthur was the son of Daniel Malone.
Florence goes out to Australia. She returns in 1922, approx 4 months pregnant with James and registers him at birth as a Corbett not a Malone. Sadly I've not been able to follow William, but wonder if they'd already got together in Australia and she decided to come back to the UK,
-
His Training Ship Exmouth record suggests his year of birth is 1885.
Was one of his ships "Nemesis"?
1911 Census
Aboard HMS Nemesis, Portland
William Corbett, age 28, Single, Able Seaman, born Suckley, Worcestershire
-
It's not very clear but the ship he's on when the census was taken looks like a ditto of Vivid I.
Turns out this was a shore establishment; the Seamanship, Signalling and Telegraphy School in Devonport.
-
But that Suckley connection might be one to follow
1891
Emma Albert 38 b Powick
Frank W Albert 14
William J Albert 7 b Suckley , Herefordshire
Harry Albert 5
There's an Emma Corbet/Corbett b Powick the right time
ALBERT, HARRY

Ah - 1881. Artillery Terrace, Claines, Worcester

Emily Corbett 26 Housekeeper. Unmarried. Housekeeper
Frank Corbett 3
Maud Corbett 8 months
-

Henry Corbett, b Worcester
Age 15

-
Dear Mabel, yes you've definitely found him .. huzzah and hurrah, fabulous detective work. John L. Albert is John Loxley Albert d. Q1 Worcester 6c 217 aged 67 ... and he's a painter which I guess William took to mean Artist as stated on his marriage certificate. The Emma Albert on the 1891 census says she is a widow, so its all tying in very nicely. I'm guessing they never really got married, but lets see. Can't thank you enough for your superb research.
-
Hanes Teulu must get credit as well for suggesting the Suckley connected William
Emma died in 1893 - age is slightly out but the middle name is the same as the Powick Emma, and address is Skinner St, as for John Albert's burial
Emma Maria Corbett
Age 43
Burial 3 Jun 1893, Worcester St John Baptist in Bedwardine
Looking at the other children
Maud is with her maternal grandparents in 1891 and a servant in 1901. She marries in 1909
Frank is more of a challenge (interestingly his middle name is also William). I lose sight of him after 1891, but there's a Frank Corbett the right age buried in Powick in 1935. His address is Royal Worcester Hospital, so maybe he's a long term inmate somewhere?

But yours was a cracking piece of sleuthing.
