Good afternoon all,
I am looking for some help in regards to tracing my GG Uncle James Barr of Dalry.
He was born 20th September, 1905 in Dalry to Samuel Barr and Sarah Barr nee Martin.
Sadly his mother died in 1909 in the Cunningham Poor House.
I have a record of poor relief for James and his sister Sarah (my G Grandmother), in 1913, due to desertion of their father. I contacted Ayrshire archives and they have sent me some records regarding their admission to the poorhouse. My great grandmother went onto marry and have children but I haven't been able to find anything regarding James.
I'm thinking due to his age on admission to the poorhouse and his father deserting the children after his wife's death that he could have been adopted? I gather this would have been informal back in those days.
I've searched census records for James Barr on Scotlands people but had no luck - spent a few £ on records that don't match sadly.
Any help/suggestions would be great.
-
Is there a discharge date on the Poorhouse record?
-
I guess this is the death of Sarah Martin?
SARAH BARR 42 mmn MILLIGAN 1909 Irvine
I note the birth registrations for Sarah & James.
All below mmn MARTIN
SARAH BARR 1902 Ardrossan New
JAMES BARR Dalry (Ayr)
However below are in the same period mmn MARTIN, are they related?
ALEXANDER BARR 1901 Ardrossan New

Yes that's the correct death for Sarah Martin her mother was Rachel Milligan/Mulligan Dromore, County Down.
Not sure regarding Mary and Alexander. The two other siblings I know about are Elizabeth Barr born 1892 Kilwinning, and William born 1890 Dromore.

Hi Colin, I've just purchased the record from Scotland's People and it is the census return for the Cunninghame Poor House.

I've discovered from the suggestions above that my great grandmother had two siblings I didn't know about, Alexander Barr born 15 July 1901 in New Ardrossan, Ayrshire and Mary Barr, born 24 February 1907 in Stevenson, Ayrshire. Haven't managed to find out anything more about them yet.

Thanks very much for this Colin.
I'm thinking that Alexander most probably also died young like Mary.
Re-examining the poor house records I obtained from Ayrshire archives, Sarah Barr their mother made an application for relief 30th March 1909, after her husband deserted.
On the record it has a list of family living with the applicant which are:
William 19 Years
Lizzie 15 Years
Sarah 7 Years
James 3 Years
A further application for relief was made 5th April 1909 after Sarah Barr had died in the poorhouse. On this application it gives their residence as C/O Mrs McColm - so assuming it's a Mrs McColm who is looking after the young children. On this application it's for Sarah junior and her brother James.
The last record I have is from 14th October 1911, an application made by the father Samuel Barr for relief for Sarah and James. It says William and Lizzie are not living with the applicant.
No mention of Alexander on any of the records.

Regarding Alexander, I do not see a death for him at a young age, I think from your latest post, it is more likely he was not the son of Samuel.

That’s interesting, I didn’t think of that. Although Samuel Barr is listed as his father on the birth certificate. But I suppose this could be a reason why he deserted the home. Although his wife Sarah was by the looks of it very ill. She had jaundice when she applied for poor relief and died of “brain disease” in the poorhouse.

If that is the case I think at least another look at the census returns might be worth a look. I checked the 1901 transcription for the family on Ancestry, see below.
Maybe there is some connection?

Louisa Barr 13 Daur born Monkton and Prestwick

Thank you both for all your digging, I have to admit I am struggling to get my head around this but it does sound like there is potential for there to be a connection.
I bought the 1901 census record for Alex Barr and Isabella Martin Barr and children from SP and 1911 Census Record for Bella Martin Barr with Son William and Alexander aged 10.

Hi Colin,
I have a copy of the 1901 census for the Barr family showing Samuel, Sarah, William and Elizabeth living at 9 Winton Buildings Ardrossan. Samuel is an Iron Ore Labourer at Docks.
Interestingly on the same page of the 1901 census for the Barr family, Sarah Barr nee Martin's sister Jane McLelland nee Martin is living in the same building with her own family.
I have also found William and Elizabeth on the 1911 census living with a William and Elizabeth McCombe (Could be McColm from the poor house records) at 15 Townhead Street, Stevenston. William is a Labourer and Elizabeth a Dynamite Worker.
I have the 1911 census for the cunninhame poor house showing James and Sarah as inmates there.
I also have Samuel Barr on the 1911 census aged 59 boarding 4 Montgomery Lane, New, Ardrossan, Ayrshire, Scotland.
Samuel died at the poor house hospital Inverkip in Greenock 13 December 1938.
William Barr married Susan Edgar 29 December 1911 in Ardrossan, They went on to have the following children that I've managed to find
William and Susan are living with Susan's father John Edgar in 1921 in Saltcoats.
John Edgar Barr 1912-1984
William Barr 1913-1981
Sarah Martin Barr 1915-1915
James Edgar Barr 1917-1977
Margaret Ringland Barr 1918-?
Alexander Barr - 1924-1928
Fred Martin Barr- 1930-1976
William Died 1959
Elizabeth Barr married Andrew Irvine 03/12/1930 Stevenston
They had one child as far as I know also called Andrew Irvine 1933-1977
Elizabeth died 23 May 1966

Hi Colin,
I downloaded the death certificate for the people you mentioned above, sadly I don't think either are correct.
The cert for for Isabella states she was the widow of Hamilton Barr, Coal Miner parents Joseph Thorburn and Janet.
The cert for Alexander states ploughman, married to Isabella Patterson Marshall parents Alexander Barr and unknown mother

I downloaded the birth certificates for Louisa, William and Robert, on both certificates they have completely different dates for their parents marriage - is this common?

My apologies, as Alexander & Isabella were the only Barr family in Ochiltree in 1901
I made a wrong assumption.
Below were on the 1911 census at Ochiltree
The cert for Isabella states she was the widow of Hamilton Barr, Coal Miner parents Joseph Thorburn and Janet. They were married Paisley in 1885, some children born there but their youngest child was born Ochiltree in 1904
As this was the only Alexander on the 1911 census, I thought he was the husband of Isabella Martin but at a different reference number, not 609/6/17.
ALEXANDER BARR 1911 50 609/ 6/ 16 Ochiltree Ayr. No other Barr's at that reference.
As regards this Alexander Barr, ploughman, married to Isabella Patterson Marshall parents Alexander Barr and unknown mother. I cannot trace him or his marriage in Scotland or Ireland?
Whilst checking the records I came across this death. Daughter of Alexander & Isabella?
ISABELLA MARTIN BARR, age 101 mmn MARTIN

I've now got the re-scan of William's birth certificate and it also gives his parents Alexander Barr Ploughman & Isabella Barr nee Martin Married February 1881 Dromore ???
So Alexander couldn't remember the date when he was married, or he got mixed up, or the registrar wrote it down wrong.
I have some families where every birth certificate gives a different date for the parents' marriage.
As the couple's names and place of marriage match, then the chances are it's the right marriage.

Hi Colin,
A few months later and I've done a bit more digging on the Barr's and Martin's.
I've found out the true identity of the Alexander who we believed (sadly not correct) was unofficially adopted by Sarah Martin's sister, Isabella.
Alexander Barr was born 8th April 1902 in Coylton. I believe this Alexander was the illegitimate son of Jane Ellen Barr, daughter of Isabella and Alexander. There is a corrected entries page on SP regarding the paternity of the child but it badly needs re-scanning which I have requested.
I purchased the 1911 census record for the family, Bella Martin Bar is living with her son William and also Alexander (census states son but this was her grandson) gives birth location as Coylton. In the 1921 census, Alexander is still living with is grandmother.
Isabella died 31st March 1922 and Alexander was the informant and listed correctly as grandson.
Unfortunately I now don't know for 100% sure if Isabella Martin is indeed the sister of Sarah Martin/Barr as she was born approx 1856 I've been unable to find a birth record. Her death certificate states her parents as John Martin and Sarah Martin nee Gray. I've been unable to find a marriage record for a John Martin and Sarah Gray. I suppose her grandson could have not known his great grandparents names so I still think it's highly likely that they are indeed sisters.
Isabella Martin is from Skeagh on her marriage certificate to Alexander Barr and her father is listed as Samuel Martin - same for her sister's marriage to Samuel Barr. I also noted that a James Heylitt is the witness to both marriages, but then he is also a witness at other marriages on the records so not sure if this is a family connection or someone who was an official at the marriage ???.
I'm also thinking that Alexander Barr and Samuel Barr are related some how... :)
