I'm doing someone's family history for them and have found a young man (Samuel Singleton/town) born in Lancashire who apparently went to Orkney and married Mary Folster on 1st June 1813 in Stromness. They seemed to have stayed a while and had at least one daughter before moving back to Manchester.
Does anyone have any idea why a man from Lancashire would go to Orkney at that time? Were there any occupation/industry links? Is Singleton perhaps an old Orkney family?

What was his occupation

I've just seen the actual marriage record on Scotland's People - he was in the army, which explains why he was in Orkney instead of Lancashire!

Possibly this Samuel Singleton from Withington, Manchester? Born circa 1774, served with 92nd Foot 1798-1811, and 9th Veterans 1811-1814. A fustian cutter by trade.
