Title: Diary summary week ending 13th October 2024
Post by: louisa maud on Monday 07 October 24 08:53 BST (UK)
Good morning folks.

Here in Essex it is a beautiful day albeit a bit chilly, would be nice to gave a few days like  this to cheer everyone up.

Hope to hear news from Viktoria soon.

Mowsehowse, you sound as if you are doing great, slowly but surely but take care.

My goodness how time flies! Just trying to psyche myself up to ordering from "Amazon" - for soem reason I always expect it to go wrong. Spent all morning today hacking lumps ( and limbs) off assorted trees and shrubs in the back garden, filling the garden waste bin for collection, in an attempt to make it tidier - rather enjoyed it, OH helped me with a saw when one was too much for the "big loppers" and me combined. Feeling almost virtuous for it. And it's sunny and not chilly. Good start to the week.

Be very careful of the saw, 3 years ago after suggesting  my OH  getting someone  in to do the job I had to drive him to the hospital, he had badly cut his thumb, he sat in the passenger seat with his thumb held high, almost had to laugh as it reminded me of a nursery rhyme,  I was not pleased with him,  so PLEASE   be careful .
Just saying

Well, what a week for me.
I had to go to the hospital on Tuesday, as my kidneys decided to play up, as shown in my blood tests.
Home on Thursday but am now under the Renal Team at my local hospital. Told dialysis is not far away.
I have been looking for my late husband's birth father. I talked my son into doing a DNA test. I also did one to knock down a few brick walls I hope.
I started a tree for my son and was contacted by my late husband's cousin on his mum's side.  My children and I are meeting her and one of her daughters on the 19th of this month.
It's not my family but when I was asked to join the reunion I just burst into tears.
Still waiting for DNA results.

Hoping Victoria is ok and regains some eyesight as I miss reading her posts.
Well done mousehowse. You seem to be getting a hold on rehab. Just take one day at a time.

Carol

Carol, so sorry to hear of your problems, hope you get your next appts soon .

DNA, I have had mine done , I am intrigued by the high British content, or whatever the right word is, I wonder how high others are being British, my husbands British  side is half mine if that makes sense , he should be treating me like a lady in my opinion , ha!!  ha!!, I would be quite interested in others percentage being British.

Sun out although there is a black cloud lurking , local news  says we aren't due any rain but I am not convinced.

We are all thinking about Viktoria  and Mowsehowse and wish them well.

Hello, all you kind folks,My son has dimmed the brightness on my IPad , it is better , if I go slowly I don’t make so many errors .

No results yet from Eye Tests at Hospital ,but perhaps I am getting used to the altered vision .
If I change glasses it might not be the best thing to do ,will sort of mask any damage done by the wrong tablets ,these glasses were new in March, we will see.

Sorry to read of so many with health problems ,have not read all the backlog of posts yet but quite a few seem to be having problems .
My sincere commiserations to you all and thanks for the kind messages J have been getting , they are most kind and much appreciated.

Just been having a laugh ,playing old tapes of the OXFAM concerts we did.
One year  there was a  theme ,so old Music  Hall songs etc .
There were in Edwardian days I think some lovely songs words by Laurence Hope who in fact was a woman
However ,the words were very ‘ heady stuff “ so not seemed decent for an Edwardian lady!
She wrote under the pseudonym Laurence Hope.
Set to music by Any Wooidfirde Findon .
We turned the tables and had our “ Lyric Baritone “ a six foot heavily built chap, and our Soprano Soloist swap roles .
So a six foot woman with a moustache in a Sari, was sung to by a five foot two man with a fake moustache :-
“ Pale hands I loved beside The Shalimar
Where are you now, who lies beneath your spell,
Whom do you send on rapture’s roadway far
Before you agonise them in farewell.
Pale hands pink tipped like Lotus buds
That float on those cool waters where we used to dwell ,
I would have rather felt them round by throat
Crushing out life than waving me farewell “—— very passionate .
It was hilarious but then sung again seriously it was lovely.

etc etc it is quite passionate stuff but very dated but the music is lovely .
I can imagine the anguish when English and Indian / Kashmiri people did fall in love.It would not have been accepted.

Well not feeling too bad, tired but have sorted out loads of stuff .
I keep things in order but keep too much too long ,now only two years if all documents etc so what happens, yes , I could do with one I have incinerated!
No great matter really.
A chap knocked at my door yesterday and asked if I would like the Lombardy pines ( very tall and slender ) lopping , I did abd have been thinking  about it ,he quoted £60 and all rubbish removed, well a local firm charges £30 for rubbish removal so I thought i£60 for everything a fair price ,but said “ let me ask my son who is upstairs “ he was so he came and spoke to them .
I think they were O.K.
They asked about my overgrown Digwood nedge which dies need lopping but I said no I’d rather wait until the leaves have fallen p then they can see better where to lop.
Drain man coming Friday ,how exciting!,
Must phone and ask if a cheque will be O.K.
Son off toHead Office  in a day or so .
I must get him to take me to a cash point although eldest son us taking me to The Solicitor .
On Thursday ,so he can fleece me out if the nine and elevenpence ha’penny
I am leaving them all!
Well done a quick check re typos, this has taken ages mainly because I go too quickly then  I do miss and touch the wrong letters,so not only altered sight to be fair
Perhaps I am getting used to the altered vision.
This has taken me an hour, but you are all worth it!

Cheerio, and agai many thanks I have missed being on RootsChat ,BUT, what a lot I have got done!
Viktoria.

Lovely to see you back  Viktoria, glad you are managing with the dimmer light on your iPad. You have been very much missed.

You wrote a long message, be careful not to overdo it and put extra strain on your eyes.

Be careful with people who knock on your door unrequested. Make sure they have a licence to dispose of things and are not fly tippers.  If fly tipped things can be traced back to you, it will be you that is held responsible.

Take care.

LM you asked about DNA.  Mine, done through ancestry is:
58%England & Northwestern Europe

26% Wales

5%Scotland

I argue with them about it, but found that Wales can include parts of Somerset mygreat grandparents came from, so might be right.
Really though I am Aussie born and bred.

Great to hear from you Viktoria and thanks for persevering with your post if it’s taken you a hour to do, we really appreciate you taking the time to let us all know how you are doing!
Hope improvements are being made for you… although it doesn’t seem to dint your humour!
As Jebber says do take care with people who call unannounced at your door offering to do work.. hopefully with your son in residence they won’t be tempted to take advantage… although I’m sure you’d give them some stick if needs be!

Its sad that today we have to be so wary of everyone… where are the good old days when trust was mainly a given.

MW - good to hear that you are making some progress and hope it continues for you..

Sorry to hear of your health issues too Carol80 hope the hospital can sort things out for you… my D-in-L is on dialysis, so far at home but think the da is coming for her to go into the hospital 3 times a week. She’s still running her business and gets on with as much as possible. She’s waiting for a kidney but so far nothing in the offing…

Well a mixed day here today, heavy torrential showers, pools of water everywhere then out comes the sun… at least it’s still mild.

Take care all

So glad to hear from you, Viktoria, so many of us on here were worried about you.
My problems are lesser, but....
I've ordered somethings from "Amazon" - and simply can't find my way round their site to cancel "free delivery on Prime" - and I don't want it! Any ideas how ? OH says wait until items have been delivered, then try again?.....

Good to hear from you Viktoria, just take it easy for a bit.

Sorry to hear about other people’s illnesses, I hope you all feel better soon.

TY I had trouble a couple of years ago suddenly being landed with Amazon Prime fortunately a rather more technical minded friend sorted it out for me.

I’m going to Keswick for 4 nights next week. I should have gone in May when I was in hospital but was able to move it to next week. Fingers crossed for fine weather.

Did anyone watch John Simm’s and Phillip Glenister’s DNA Journey yesterday evening? I found it rather tedious and  one of the least memorable programmes. Perhaps it was just me, normally  I quite enjoy the those programmes, but yesterday  I had been knocked for six having been shocked to received some very sad news during the day. I had hoped the programme would give me something else to think about.

I can't say the programme next week looks very enticing, I don't care for Ricky Tomlinson and usually avoid anything involving him. But  I will be interested  to see what Sue Johnson's  DNA reveals.

Don't remember such problems when the data was supplied by The Met Office?

My Wife mentioned this morning, that the UK weather was wrong and our weather reporting system had gone crazy .

Reuters are claiming that an App had failed?
https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/bbc-weather-app-wrongly-shows-18995-mph-wind-speeds-britain-2024-10-10/

Years ago they would conduct an Inquiry, when the forecast was seriously wrong, I wonder if we'll hear this time?

We went to bed in 1987 with high winds, but at 01.35 Universal Time 16th October in the morning the Meteorological Office warned the Ministry of Defence that the weather was going to be upgraded and be very severe etc., etc., and to start planning to assist.

 ----------
Today they claim their supercomputer is "capable of 14,000 trillion arithmetic operations each second."

How can one even check the accuracy of a statement like that.

What would we do without RootsChat?
I find it so friendly and like a friend .

Got my little phone working and all charged up.
Then my kind son who took me to Solicitor’s today re will and things then got my phone sorted ,bombarded me with science and all I wanted was to send and get messages . I now have forgotten the basics !
I can only assimilate a little at a time nowadays .

The less bright screen is much better , I had no idea it was possible to change it ,I am not fit really to have any “ technology “I might be better with a gas phone!
Look after yourselves folks .

Sometimes these modern things are a real pain, my husband was looking at a site, just looking, next thing he gets an email  confirming  an order, he quickly went back online  to cancel it, to late, got in touch with his  card company and they have cancelled any future payments they might help themselves to, it really is all wrong, I suspect others might have been caught out.

Sun out all day after a frosty start, bit chilly but the sun being out kids us it is warm,  lovely day

PS, what worried me was that he hadn't  added any of his details in or his credit card in.

Nope, it has come from a friend who came out to a folk club on Wednesday night, despite being very obviously off colour. I feel it was almost inevitable that I would catch whatever he had and last night his wife told me that he had tested positive. There are several friends wondering why he didn't do the test before coming out on Wednesday!! ::) ::) ::)

People are relaxing I feel and still some wear masks for their protection but really they are more for protecting others .
No sign of flu or Covid boosters at our surgery yet.

I have some Lombardy apices in my front garden.
About three feet high ,planted seven years ago.
Now - well were a good twelve feet high .
I had been meaning to get them lopped ,wel on Thursday I was in thr front garden when a white van pulled up and a man got out and said would I like him to lol them for me , I asked the price and he said £60 and all rubbish removed. my son said he would do it ,a week or so ago but has not got round to doing it. There was so much to move it would have taken about three journeys to the tip plus all the spiders etc that would creep, out.
To get a local rubbish remover would Cost £35 per load to move that
amount .
I know these opportunist people can be dodgy so said I would ask my son and would see what he thought, son said OK,but that is all we want doing .
The man said - he could see it - that my Dogwood was overgrown and he’d do that too but I refused as it needs pruning not just lopping and that is better done when the leaves have gone .
Son said O.K then just the front garden trees .
They had all the right ladders etc but only used long loppers .
But no name on the van .——
Then later I thought what if there had been an accident !
Son was quite forceful and said remember we don’t want the Dogwood
 doing !
It looks much better.
However they did most of it from outside the fence ,and I think it was a bargain .

But you have to be very careful don’t you.

I seem to have got rather mixed up in my last post- it doesn’t take much these days .

Thanks for your continuing kind wishes folks, they are much appreciated , especially as many of you have worries and problems  of your own.

Well a good day today ,got a good bit done .
Best wishes to all who are troubled , I do think about you .
Cheerio. Viktoria.

Pleased to see you back viktoria.

It is always a worry someone knocking on the door to offer help but you had your son there so he could support you, a few years ago we had a similar problem, argued for over an hour but when someone who has been on next doors roof sees a problem you sort of have to agree, he went onto the roof with a bucket of something or the other, charged us £300 , I had to search around  as we don't have that sort of cash, the last £10 was almost all small change, he gave it back to me to treat myself to a bottle of something, then i saw a smirk on his face, wondered with we had been " done".

It was so dark st 9am we had to have the lights on, wet and miserable day outside.

I am off to the new week now,  tra!!

Hope you and your family are all alright .

Are we starting a new week?  (This is a hint to LM, who usually does this for us.)

I have just spent a lovely day with my daughter, who was celebrating her 49th birthday.  She picked me up in her car and took me to the nearest city (only a small one), where we had lunch and did bits of shopping.  It rained the whole day, sometimes really heavily and sometimes not too heavily.  The country roads were flooded in places and I believe the railway lines have also been flooded at times, leading to trains being cancelled.

We have a mystery roof leak in the single storey part of the house, which lets water in in one place, but only when the wind is blowing in a certain direction.  Today the wind must have been coming from somewhere else, so there were no puddles on the kitchen floor when I came back home.  We just can't work out where the water is getting in.

Keep smiling, folks! :D

I think someone is trying to slow the year down, it's flying by too quickly. ;D

Had my Covid  and flu jabs yesterday, rather tender left arm from Covid jab but otherwise okay.

Spent the morning trying to get an electrician, all have long waiting list, my usual one is away. Fortunately managed to solve the problem with the help of my cleaner. So frustrating that mobility problems stop me from doing things myself, oh for the days when I could shin up a step ladder.

The temperature has certainly risen today, now the rain has arrived. Where did the summer go?
