I'm looking for more information on my grandfather's side of my family. I've been lucky enough to visit Ballitore, and I know the bare bones of information(I have contact details for some of my mother's surviving cousins).
My great grandfather was Peter Brennan(1865 - 1916). His wife was Ellen neé O'Shaugnessy (1881 - 1954). They had six children, four boys(Patrick, Peter John, Joseph, and Michael) and two daughters(Bridget Ellen and Mary Josephine). Peter worked as a groom and labourer, and they would travel to Cheltenham during racing season.
My great uncle Michael is a mystery. I've been told he died when he was 10, as a result of an accidental drowning. However, the only record I can find is of a child of the same name in Ennis, Co.Clare, so I'm not sure if that's him.
I'm also trying to find what stud my great grandfather would have worked for.
I'd be really grateful if anyone could help.

The Michael Brennan (aged 10) who died in Co Clare was a labourer's son. He died 25 March 1921 as a result of accidental drowning. His father John was the informant. The townland is hard to make out. (https://www.townlands.ie/) #468

Hi
There was a Michael Brennan born 1911 to John Brennan and Bridget nee Sullivan of Bearnageeha, Ennis, which seems to match the age and address of the child drowned in 1921. See below:-

I’ve tried all sorts of searches in the local papers and can’t find any mention of a drowning for Michael or any other kind of death, lots of other boys from all parts of the country.
Lots of things got overlooked in that period due to the War of Independence etc but you would expect something for a tragic child death, that said he’s not the first accidental child death with no newspaper report or death cert I’ve encountered, last one at least had a burial record.

Patrick was my maternal grandfather. He joined the army in the early 1930s, and was stationed at the then Portobello barracks in Rathmines. He married a local girl, named Mary, and had six children. Mary passed away in January 1962, and Patrick died in June 1970.

Is this the marriage?
On 2 October 1935 to Mary Mulligan at Terenure RC Church, Dublin.

Yep, that's my grandparents. <3
Now the Mulligans(my grandmother's family)......that's a whole different tale.
-
When Mary Mulligan of Harolds Cross Road, Terenure, married Patrick in 1935, her Father is named Patrick, a Groom.
At the same Harold’s Cross address in 1941, Patrick (Groom) was described as a widower when he died. See:-
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1941/04705/4256380.pdf
Do you know the name of Mary’s Mother?

Do you know the name of Mary’s Mother?
Mary's mother was Margaret Mahon, of Windy Arbour, born 18th of November 1881. The big mystery surrounding Patrick Mulligan is his date of birth; his death certificate states that he was 49 when he passed, but I can't find any birth record for him.
-
Death cert ages are often incorrect, people didn’t keep track of their ages as we do today and the informant was often making a guess.
Is this Patrick in 1911 and his marriage in 1908
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1908/10056/5657492.pdf
http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Rathmines___Rathgar_West/Harold_s_Cross_Road/67041/
That would give a birth year of about 1882, however on his marriage his father Thomas is a van driver so this looks like the family in 1901
http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Kingstown/Ard_s_Cottages/1318433/
Which would give a birth year of about 1888
There is a birth of a Patrick Mulligan in 1888 to Thomas Mulligan and Lizzy Staunton but Thomas is a gardener
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1888/02518/1933264.pdf
When Peter is born Thomas is a porter
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1896/02152/1816260.pdf
I can’t find Margaret.
So jump to 1911
http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Dublin/Kingstown_No__3/Desmond_Avenue/91570/
Problem with this is it say 4 living children, this can sometimes be a misunderstanding between alive and living at home but it’s need following up
Anyway when Myles was born Thomas was a van driver.

There are two Patrick Mulligan boys deaths in Rathdown reg district between 1901 and 1911
One 14 in 1901 a Farm labourer’s son with a different address the other 13 in 1902 a labourer’s son died in an Industrial School where he is in 1901 census.
So I think the other family is still a possibility for your Patrick.

My great uncle Patrick Mulligan died in 1918 at the age of six from Pott's Disease. My grandmother, Mary, had one sister(Anne), and two surviving brothers(John and James). They lived in and around the Harolds Cross area, with my great grandfather Mulligan working for Byrne's Dairy at 274 Harolds Cross Road. The building is still there, but it's now an Indian take away with a print shop where the stables were.
I've hit a brick wall with my great grandfather Mulligan's line, although I managed to trace the Brennan line back to Dublin in 1744.

Wouldn’t that Patrick died age 6 be Patrick and Margaret’s son.
I was looking for birth of his father Patrick married to Margaret Mahon.

Have you looked at the rest?
I have a feeling you only saw the post about the two Patrick deaths.
-
Patrick Mulligan’s father was James Mulligan. Someone else who tried to look him up found a James Mulligan who worked at Silveracre in Rathfarnham, but that’s where Patrick’s birth year doesn’t make sense if he was 49 when he passed away.
-
Oh yes, where did I get Thomas from, must have slipped onto the record below. Start again so.
He may not have been 49 when he died.
-
He says 29 in 1911 so this is likely him in 1901
http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Dublin/Holmpatrick/Milverton_Demesne/1264249/
-
He died in 1941 at 49 years = circa 1892
1911 aged 29 years = circa 1882
If he was born 1892 and married in 1908 he would have been a minor, cert says full age so at least 21.
I’d trust what he said in the census over a stranger in a hospital.
Patrick Michael son of James a labourer born 1878
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1878/02955/2082307.pdf
Baptism number 45
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633455?locale=en#page/6/mode/1up
Doesn’t have a note of who/if he married, so annoying, would have proved one way or the other.

Hi Michael Brennan would of been my father-in-laws uncle I have it that he died in 1921 Kildare and Rathangan, Kildare.
I would of got that from one of the trees on Ancestry of the cousins I'll see if I can find anymore information.
