Title: Sheila Colman
Post by: catherine k on Wednesday 18 September 24 17:53 BST (UK)
Hi
I'm searching for information regarding my late mother's Cousin Sheila Colman born around the 1930s newcastle upon tyne her parents were Bessie nee fraser and Norman Colman both were living in Newcastle upon tyne 1940s onwards to the 1980s Sheila was not living with them in 1947 but was in 1951 she was know as Sheila on the Electoral roll then in 1954 know as Robinson I think she got married in 1953 to James H Robinson and they had a son Brian J Robinson then I'm sure if she married again in 1968 it's very strange I cannot find her Birth records I can find her 2 siblings Elizabeth Patricia colman 1928 and William JN Colman I'm beginning to wonder if she was there Biological daughter my mother was very close to her I'm sure she met up with her around the 1980s but never knew what happened to her as I can't find her death I've searched to help my elderly relative to find out about Sheila and her son Brian but can't find anything if anyone can help with some information I would be very grateful
Thankyou kindly.

I cannot find the family in 1939!

Norman Colman m Bessie Fraser Q3 1926 Newcastle upon Tyne

Bessie Colman d Q4 1981 Newcastle
dob 18 July 1904

Norman Colman d Dec 1986 Northumberland Central
dob 7 Sep 1901

Norman and Bessie at Beaufront Gardens Newcastle upon Tyne, Electoral Register 1966

A search for Colman births with mmn Fraser only finds Patricia and William JN as detailed in the OP.

Sheila Colman m James H Robinson Q2 1952 Newcastle upon Tyne

I haven't found anything about this wedding at BNA.

More on the 1966 Electoral Register that I mentioned above. I didn't look closely enough.

At number 9 Beaufront Gardens are Norman and Bessie Colman plus Sheila M Robinson.

At number 3 is a Minnikin family:
Edward Minnikin (snr.)
Priscilla N Minnikin
Irene Coulson [NOT Minnikin]
Edward Minnikin (jnr)

With a free FindMyPast account you can buy the newspaper page, usually 50p each. It's very easy and gives access as soon as you have paid. Other records are available pay per view.

Newcastle Journal

Based on the composition of the Fraser family in 1921 (parents William and Mary, six children including Bessie), I think that I have found Mary Fraser and two sons at 102 Park Road in 1939. There are no Colmans in this household.

(If anyone follows this up, the son John Fraser in the 1921 census is registered as born John L Fraser, Q2 1920 mmn Owens, Newcastle, and appears as Leslie in 1939. The other 1939 son, Norman is registered Q3 1921 mmn Owens)

In 1930 Bessie Colman and Norman are living 26 Mons Lines Catterick Camp, in 1929 Bessie is registered living with her mother
Also registered at the camp 1931 1932 1933 and 1934

I cannot see a death for Sheila's son so must be careful here, but there are two birth registrations for someone of his name (including initial) born Newcastle Q1 1953. One has mmn Colman and the other has Henderson. Could this be the same birth registered twice?

Following on from that, for what it's worth, there are two Sheila M Henderson births registered in Newcastle, 1931 and 1934.

Sheila Mary Minnikin's death registration gives her birth year as 1930. There is an Army birth registration, Sheila Colman, 1930, Alexandria. No middle initial, no mother’s maiden name.

Radcliff, it was your Catterick post that alerted me to the possible significance of the birth in Alexandria.

Presumably members of the armed forces were not included in the 1939 register, but what about their families living in barracks – were they also excluded?

I think the children may have perhaps been evacuated at this point ,

Hi sorry I think I've replied to the wrong post as I wanted to thank everyone for all the information regarding Sheila Colman I'm so very grateful also I was wondering who was Sheila Henderson is she by chance Sheila mary Colman my Mam was born 1937 and I'm sure there was only a few years between them I just find it strange that there's no maiden name in 1930 registration
Thankyou all so much

Edward Minnikin may have been married previously to Olive M Douglas( 4th September 1923) , Newcastle
Olive M Minnikin died in 1962, and they may have had a daughter together in 1955, I won't print her name as its highly likely she is still alive,  in 1956 they are living with her mother perhaps, in Marsden Street,

My suggestion of Sheila Henderson as a possibiity was very much a long shot based on the coincidence of two births registered close together with the name of Sheila’s son. There would need to be some more solid evidence before taking it too seriously.

Also the age at death of Sheila Mary Minnikin doesn’t fit with the births of the two Sheila M Hendersons that I saw.

William JN Colman possibly married Roberta Lewis September 1956 Newcastle,
they possibly lived Malvern Terrace in 1958,
he may have remarried in Newcastle in 1980,
and a William Colman died Lemington 22Feb 2011 aged 84 years, cremated West Road,
you would have to verify this , as I can't be sure its the correct person, There is a Roberta A Colman marriage Northumberland S Dec 1969,

Hi
I am also wondering if Sheila  mary Colman name was Sheila Henderson as its strange that there was also Sydney Colman and his other siblings William and Elizabeth were all registered as there birth mother fraser also William colman did live in Malvern street it was the next street to my mother as my mam and Sheila used to visit William so that's definitely William and his wife Reberta yes he was very young also I did forgot about Sydney Colman I think his dad had had a brother Sydney
Thanking you all so much

Since I started this Sheila M Henderson story (see reply #19) I thought that I should see it through. I've traced the two Sheila M Hendersons born in Newcastle around the relevant period and have ruled them both out as being Sheila M Colman.

The SMH born Newcastle 1931 is in the 1939 register (unredacted!) with her parents (Henry Russell M Henderson and Andrina (Reekie)) and she married (Stone) in 1955.

The SMH born 1934 is with her parents (John Hunter Henderson and Edith (Kay)) in the 1956 Newcastle electoral register.

Thus there is noting to support the theory that the namesake of Sheila M Colman's son born in Q1 1953 with mmn Henderson was the son of a Sheila M Colman who had actually been born as Sheila M Henderson.
