Title: Cheshire Yeomanry
Post by: BarbW on Saturday 14 September 24 18:13 BST (UK)
Today I found an obituary for a relative Edward Harry Young who it said had been a member of the above for 12 years as a quarter-master sergeant and had also been in the detachment that formed a guard of honour at the King's Coronation.

He died in 1918 at the age of 38 years old of heart failure.  He was the proprietor of the Union Vaults, Nantwich.

Do any records of this regiment survive?  I've had a look at their general history but can't seem to find anything.

Unfortunately the only record that seems to have survived for him is the award of the Territorial Force Efficiency Medal on 1st July 1912. This medal was awarded to Territorial Force soldiers after they had completed 12 years service. This suggests that he joined the Cheshire Yeomanry in 1900. Quite possibly he enlisted in order to serve with the Imperial Yeomanry (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Yeomanry) force which went to serve in the 2nd Boer War, but since there is no record of him receiving the South Africa medal, it is unlikely he actually went there.

It is also unlikely that he saw any action during the First World War if he was still serving. The Cheshire Yeomanry remained on Home Defence duties in East Anglia for much of the early years, then the 1/1 Regiment went to Egypt, and the 1/2 Regiment to Ireland.
His regimental number was 146.

I assume that you have seen that he left a will.

Thank you so much.  I was hoping for a bit of Boer War action with him being in the King's Coronation honour guard detail, but most likely that's more because he was a Freemason.

Yes I came across his will today.  He is the great nephew of my ancestor and I only started looking into him more today as Ancestry had sent me a newspaper hint by email, probably because they are trying to sell their newspaper subscription, but I already have Find My Past so logged in there to find it.
