I have just started looking into my friends genealogy . It is confusing as the practice of sharing names between parents and child have made me confused if I am looking at the right generation . If we start with Ernest John smith born April 19 th 1925 in Aberdeen . He married Sylvia rose Ellen Richardson ,Sept 1946 he died in Mirfileld . 2007.
We believe his father to be Robert Smith and possibily Esther Matilda Jeffs are Ernest parents . We are very confused with the children . We think Robert Smith had a child with his boarder . Elizabeth Sims . Child being Robert junior in the 1901 census . There is then a gap.
I don’t know what happen to Elizabeth Sims but Robert smith senior married Esther Matilda JEFFS in 7 th June 1919.
our confusion now is who are the mothers of ,
Esther Matilda . 1922-2004
Ernest Jon Smith 1925-2007
Robina 1926-2008 .
The further children my friend personally are Iris and Victor Smith .
I last have Robert senior , Esther and Robert junior smith together in 1928/29 register list . The family lived at times in 6 Hayton Road . I am wondering if there is three mothers ? Any help desperately needed and appreciated. Fred .

I don’t know that there should be confusion.
You simply go to Scotland’s People and download the birth, marriage and death certificates
https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Victor (age 77) died 2017 - mother’s maiden name Jeffs
Iris (age 85) died 2015 - mother’s maiden name Jeffs
Robina (age 82) died 2008 - - mother’s maiden name Jeffs
Esther Matilda (age 81) died 2004 - mother’s maiden name Jeffs

The son named Robert who appears in the 1901 census with his father Robert Smith and the boarder Elizabeth Sim may have his birth registered under the surname Sim in 1901 St Nicholas.
There is a marriage record in 1901 St Nicholas for Robert Smith to Elizabeth Sim.
Have you downloaded that record? That will give her parents names and help you search for her further.
-
The confusion is because my friend has no knowledge of an Aunt Robina and that there are several Robert’s ( father and son ) several Esther Matilda ( mother and daughter ) Nicknames that appear to have no relevance . . Cousins that were unknown born in the family home , two wives . But thank you for the helpful hint in regards getting information from Scotland . I will put pen to paper . Thanks . It’s a start . Fred .

Thank you for that marriage . I will register with Scotland people now . Thanks for the help . Fred

I think in addition to Robert born 1901, likely as Sim, you might be best also looking at and considering that the following births may also have been children of the 1901 Robert and Elizabeth marriage:
SMITH
JOHN
SIM
M
1904
168 / 1 / 309
St Nicholas
SMITH
GEORGE WISHART
SIM
M
1906
168 / 1 / 1097
St Nicholas
SMITH
MAGDELINA CHALM
SIM
F
1907
168 / 1 / 1647
St Nicholas
SMITH
BIRNIE SIM
SIM
M
1910
168 / 1 / 435
St Nicholas
SMITH
FRANK MILNE
SIM
M
1911
168 / 1 / 926
St Nicholas
with two early deaths being:
SMITH
GEORGE WISHART
9
SIM
M
1916
168 / 1 / 429
St Nicholas
SMITH
BIRNIE SIM
4
SIM
M
1914
168 / 1 / 1104
St Nicholas
and a possible marriage
SMITH
FRANK MILNE
JENKINS
ELSIE MAY
1936
168 / 3 / 336
Aberdeen Eastern District
with likely death:
SMITH
FRANK MILNE
80
SIM
M
1991
304 / 633
Aberdeen
Other likely death:
SMITH
JOHN
79
SIM
M
1983
302 / 413
Aberdeen
and only because of ages, area and surname combination, a look at these deaths might be needed:
SMITH
MARGARET
81
SIM
F
1991
300 / 406
Aberdeen
SMITH
ANN ELIZABETH S
82
SIM
F
1994

as one of them may have been the 'Betty', you mentioned by PM.

Lastly, for now, I would think it worthwhile checking the following, as all have been indexed with same reference number. Whilst various surnames are indexed, none being Smith, given age and location, it might, however unlikely it seems, still be the 'missing' Elizabeth:
SIM
ELIZABETH
34
F
1919
168 / 1 / 557
St Nicholas
CATTO
ELIZABETH SIM
34
F
1919
168 / 1 / 557
St Nicholas
FACHIE
ELIZABETH SIM
34
F
1919
168 / 1 / 557
St Nicholas
MILNE
ELIZABETH SIM
34
F
1919
168 / 1 / 557
St Nicholas
MCKAY
ELIZABETH SIM
34
F
1919
168 / 1 / 557
St Nicholas
Ignore above, this Elizabeth is accounted for in a 1906 marriage to a Peter Fachie.

In the 1911 census Elizabeth Smith (nee Sim) is living with her four children , but there does not seem to be the father / husband Robert Smith in the home.
1911 census St Nicholas Aberdeen Ref 168/1 20/ 21
Elizabeth Smith 31
Robert Smith 10
John Smith 7
George Smith 4
Birnie Smith 1

1921 census St Nicholas Aberdeen Ref 168/1 68/ 11
Robert Smith 45
Ether Smith 25

Frank Smith 9

The other infant death then, missed first time around due to different spelling:
SMITH
MAGDALENA CHALM
1
F
1908
168 / 1 / 1022
St Nicholas

So, the surviving children (other than Robert junior), from first wife, Elizabeth, were with Robert and second wife Esther at 1921, suggesting Robert's RAF record from 1918/19, which stated he was a widower, was correct, and as it apparently also stated this on his marriage to Esther, all seems in order, yet still no obvious death record for Elizabeth in Scotland, despite it likely occuring between 1911 and 1919.
frederickay, what was Elizabeth's mum's surname, per the 1901 marriage?
-
Hi 5 am here in NZ . I have had Quick Look but will take it in further after morning coffee . I am sure some of these names will be correct as I had seen a note elsewhere that Robert Smith was a widower left with six children and I see you have their names there . I will have to refresh my memory as to his marriage date to Elizabeth Sim but I believe it was in 1901 after the census . Thank you for your incredible efforts . I have registered with Scotland people and am getting used to the workings of it . Back to sleep now …
-
Just to confirm two of the children below are Robert and Elizabeth children as Elizabeth’s family have the same names . Magdalena Charmers and Birnie sims feature in Elizabeth life . I now just need to sort out in which generation . . I will continue to dig deeper . Thank you . Fred
-

SIM
BIRNIE

but that was only 3 years before Elizabeth's own marriage.

So, did the 1901 marriage certificate for Robert Smith and Elizabeth Sim, name her parents as Birnie Sim and Isabella Rollo, or different names?

Yes, I also would like to know what is on that marriage certificate. :)
