Title: House numbers Great Britain Street vs Parnell Street
Post by: denmcn on Wednesday 11 September 24 12:32 BST (UK)
Hi all,

I'm trying to plot actual locations for a particular line of my ancestors onto a map. Quite a few lived and had businesses on Great Britain Street in the 1800s. So I have two asks please:

- Does anyone know if the numbering remained the same over the years, and
- Can anyone point me in the direction of a street map of the street, as it was then, with building numbers included please

Thanks in advance,
D

The street name was altered sometime in the 1920s but I state that based upon memory and it should be checked. Accordingly, I compared entries in Thoms Directory for 1911 and 1948 (i.e. before and after name change ) and found the numbers matched.
There is an entry in The Irish Times newspaper stating that sometime before 1867 No.69 in the street became 79.
Was a David McEvoy(died 1872) a person of interest to you (at No.208) ?

Thanks Felixquaxer

Its Roe and Keegan I'm interested in here (not my McEvoys) and in the 1800s

I have my 3x GF Patrick Roe at nos. 46,54,57,66,70 and 169 - all between 1837 and 1866! Since I posted I spent some time going back over various Thoms directories and found that their Street Directories indicate where each street intersects another....this was hugely helpful and I was able to mark out where each of these actually were.

thanks again for your help
D

The Town Plan maps of the city date 1847 include house numbers at the time , there's a copy on the UCD digital library website : Dublin City Sheet 14 (https://digital.ucd.ie/view/ucdlib:40835)
they also have a slightly later map dated 1860s (https://digital.ucd.ie/view/ucdlib:40836) but dont believe this one has numbers.

As far as I remember the council changed the name to Parnell St. in 1911.

Some further comments might be appropriate
Perusal of Thoms for 1911 and 1923 show the street name was changed within that period.
Shaw's Pictorial Directory 1850 shows line engravings of facades in street but unfortunately none for the premises which are of interest to you.
The Irish Times for 16th April 1867 Page ! in an advert. indicates that No. 79 was formerly No.69. I stated that before to put you on your guard as to the numeration of Dublin streets. If a dated map shows numbers if may well be in order but as time passed, Not So.

The earliest report of the change I could spot - Dublin Evening Telegraph, 13 Nov 1911 - but it continued to appear (extensively) under the old name for some years to come
