Title: Susannah Rise Schwenn nee Allen
Post by: Mariea Christoforou on Monday 09 September 24 16:43 BST (UK)
Hi, I haven’t used Rootschat for a while.
I’m trying to find out if Susannah Rose Schwenn nee Allen was ever admitted to a mental institution in Sydney perhaps between 1885 and 1911. When her son George Edward Schwenn/Swain was sent to the industrial training ship the “Vernon” in 1883 she was described as being a drunkard. She had 10 children but lost 3 as babies and her husband Carl was bankrupt in 1889. Thank you.Mariea C

You may already have what appears to be her funeral notice in TROVE:

https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/28135653
SCHWENN.-The Friends ot Mr. CARL SCHWENN are kindly invited to attend the Funeral of his late beloved WIFE, Susannah Rose, which will leave her late residence. 4 York-place, off Wise-street, Rozelle, Balmain, THIS AFTERNOON, at 2 o'clock, for Church of England Cemetery, Field of Mars.

and a Return Thanks notice
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/15259900
RETURN THANKS.
CARL SCHWENN and FAMILY, of No. 8 York-buildings, off Wise-street, Rozelle, return their heartfelt
THANKS to all kind friends and neighbours for letters, telegrams, and expressions of sympathy, also
to Mr. T. Murcer, the Missionary, and the Nurse who attended to her at home.

There are some In memoriam Notices for her in 1912, 1913, 1915, 1917 (I may have missed some!)
AlsoCarl's death and funeral notices in 1923.
There are some In Memoriam notices for Carl up to 1927 which also mention Susannah.

TROVE has quite a few articles with regard to Carl's bankruptcies/insolvencies in 1889 and in 1870.

I am not seeing the son's entry the Vernon information on Ancestry but I can't seem to get it to load properly  ???

Hi Judith,
Thank you for your reply. There is a newspaper article, SMH May 1883 of George Schwenn aged 8 or 10 being sent to the "The Vernon". I also have a photograph of him aged about 12 years , in uniform on the Vernon.
Regards

Doesn't necessarily help - there is a testamonial for Arnott's Milk Arrowroot biscuits by Mrs SCHWENN of 174 Evans St, Rozelle in June 1903. (Noting that Carl SCHWENN's bankruptcy showed him at 13 Evans St, Balmain.)

Callan Park Asylum was situated at Rozelle and it is possible that Susannah was placed there close to her family. NSW State Archives show that records are available up to 1896 but I searched for her without success.
