Hello
Can anyone be so kind as to look up a death for Mary Jane Pickles born circa 1880 in England and married to James Ogilvie Dickson. James was born in 1874 in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Occupation was a farmer. I'm unable to find a sailing for him after 1891 but have found him on census records in Canada
So far, I've been unable to find a marriage for them in Canada but they had 3 daughters, that I've found:
Florence Val Dickson born circa 1911
Dorothy Alexandra born 28 Feb 1915
Jean Dickson born 25 July 1918
I also have a Manifest for James in 1929 accompanied by his sister in law, Mrs P. B. Shaw
1930 & 1932 from Victoria, BC to Eastport, Idaho. On 1932 one, his wife is named as Maude Crowe. It seems he travelled back & Forth. Maybe he remarried. All the more confusing
Someone has Mary dying on 10 February 1930 in Victoria but I haven't found a death for her or a gravestone
Hoping someone can solve the mystery

You're in luck. The Victoria Daily Times is available online for free. Here is a link to the 1931-05-20 issue. I couldn't find a reference to Mary Jane Dickson or even a specific Arts and Culture section, but I didn't read the entire paper.
I hope you can find what you're looking for in this issue. If you go to the webpage, you can download it in PDF form using the menu on the righthand side.

Oops! It looks like you changed your original request. I’ll dig up the obituary for Mary.

Yes, I saw that one but it's registered under married name so unsure if it's Actually her. Would it not be recorded under her maiden name??

If I’m correctly understanding your question, no, in North America deaths are typically recorded using the woman’s married name. [I believe Scottish deaths were/are generally recorded with maiden names?] Apologies if my reply is incorrect.

Lisa beat me to it. Just what I was going to say. Death's usually recorded under married name.

Possibly Mary Jane?

and James (buried in the same section as Mary Jane)
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/248747796/james-ogilvie-dickson
I’ve not reread the posts; perhaps this was already mentioned? (Hubby chatting; difficult to concentrate) ;D
Added: are deaths in Scotland still recorded with the woman’s maiden name? Just curious.

Here is the obituary. It is from the Victoria Daily Times, Wednesday, February 12, 1930.
-
On 1932 one, his wife is named as Maude Crowe.
I'm not sure that I can see the entry you are talking about. I can see an entry for James O DICKSON accompanied by "bro Henry and nephew George" on 29 Sept 1932. :-\

I think Mary Jane Pickles was born in 1880 in Thornton, Yorkshire, England to George and Annie Pickles. Her siblings were Calvin and Edith Pickles.

U.S. Border Crossing - May 7, 1929
Seaport of landing - Portland, ME (Maine). Date of landing - 1903
In one document, he stated that he arrived in 1902. Could this be his arrival to North America (incorrect year, though):
Tunisian, arrived 1 April, 1901, Portland, Maine. Departed from Liverpool, England
James Dickson, age 26 (born c1875), single. Occupation: Lab. Could read and write.
Last residence: “Edinboro”. Final destination: Winnipeg
Contract No.: 8276
Possibly traveling with James?
James Robertson, age 30 (or 20), married. Same details as above, including the contract number.
Shown directly under Mr. Robertson, Hanna and Alex (child).
Did James know a Robertson family? ???

James Ogilvie Dickson b. 27 Apr 1875 d. 21 Sep 1939. It doesn't look like he remarried.
-
There was another James Dickson living in Victoria who married a Margaret Pratt in 1920. It's not the same James as your James O. Dickson.
-
…I'm unable to find a sailing for him after 1891 but have found him on census records in Canada…
Apparently, James Robertson was James Dickson’s brother-in-law (and Hanna was an older sister).

Many many thanks to everyone who looked up the information, especially Michelle and Lisa. I couldn't have done it without you.
Lisa, it's still the same in Scotland. Deaths are registered for women under maiden name. James's sister Hannah was married to James Robertson
I made a mistake with the manifest for 1932. It's for 1930. Maddy, I've sent PM with the document

Haven't received the pm yet, however I think the entry for 2 Nov 1930 says James O DICKSON is accompanied by a William CROWE.
-
I thought it said Wife Maude Crowe

Hi,
Sometimes with border crossings, they like to have next of kin for the person who is accompanying, which is recorded on the back of the card.....Maude Crowe, 5757 Curr St., Vancouver and as they
were driving across, the make of car, Ford Sedan with a BC car license plate is also noted.

Hi,
A passenger list on the SS Canada departing Liverpool arriving Portland, Maine on 5 Feb. 1910.
Pickles, Mary Jane, age 30, single, b. England, destined to Saskatoon and to James Dickson, Stoney Road, Saskatoon to be married. She gives her brother Calvin Pickles of Thornton, Bradford, England as closest relative.
With her is her sister Edith Pickles age 20, destined to Saskatoon as well.
Saskatchewan marriage records are not available. See here, and these records have been unavailable for quite a number of years. ???

I did have a look in the Saskatoon newspapers to see if there was a marriage announcement, but no luck.

Edith must have married the same year that she arrived in Canada:

Her husband, Percy, passed on 29 May 1949 in Saskatchewan. There was a death notice, but nothing of genealogical value.
Edith must have moved to Ontario to be near one of her daughters:

I know you have it... but have to say was totally impressed with the Pickle sisters stating full names for the children on the 1916 census!

- They were actually farming around Eagle Creek, about 50 mins drive N.East from Saskatoon

I am thinking if you want the marriage info & don't mind paying for it...it should be searchable on their end. Wouldn't hurt to ask what the cost might be, if you can give them an approximate date.
(Also the names are quite distinct if they also used their middle names & I am guessing they would have.) Surely they must have a searchable database for some marriages.

-Forgot to say that on 1916 census, date of immigration for James - 1902
1906 says 1901 1911 Robert says 1900 and James says 1906? ( or a very bad last zero)
Brother Robert isn't included on the FHS tree so am adding some of his info for those searching
Margaret Eunice DICKSON birth Aug 22 1908
Born: PERDUE Sask parents Jeanette GRIEVE & Robert DICKSON
Sister Mary Valance Dickson doesn't show on the records with various details etc. searched.
1911 census has an elderly/widowed Andrew Grieve a few dwellings over who may be her father
1916 Robert's family- with wife's sister & her Children & M.I.L. (Eliz. Grieve m. Thomas GRAY 18/11/1889 Winnipeg Manitoba)
Note Jeanette is now Jessie, and have seen this forename before, also interchangeable with Janet, Jane, Jeanne, depending on a Scottish family's nicknaming variants.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KM59-TJ8
ADDING: By the way several Graveyards here in Manitoba have plenty of gravestones, well into the late 1800s, with Scottish wives under their maiden names.
