I believe that James Fitzjohn is my great-grandfather's brother. However, once. he arrives in Canada, he disappears. Could he have died on the ship?

Hello,
The actual manifest for Jas Fitzjohn (incorrectly indexed as Geo Peterjohn) appears have all the ticks indicating he arrived alive in Quebec, as one of 4 boys received into the care of "Father Seddon for ?Ottawa". (I'm not sure of the "Ottawa" bit)
John Kelleher 16, Mich. Mahoney 15, Jas. Fitzjohn 14, Jos. North 12
What parish in UK did your Fitzjohn come from? There is a John Fitzjohn of Whitechapel Union being reported on in 1886-1887. Poignant reading the reports of the children - many of whom, particularly boys - ran away from their placement homes etc,

I’ve not yet found Jas Fitzjohn, but perhaps these are two of the other fellows?
1911 Grand Calumet Township, Pontiac, Quebec
John Kelleher. Born June 1865, England. Age 45. Married. Irish.
Immigration Year: 1880
Quebec Death Register
…born 18 June 1864…
1881 Calumet Island, Pontiac, Quebec
Joseph North. Born 1868, England. Age 13. Catholic.
In the residence of Rev. Ouellet (Parish Priest) and other individuals
It may be a wild goose chase, but perhaps James also lived in Calumet at some point?

Thank you! John Fitzjohn is my great-grandfather.
I think that James was his brother, both were Catholic and sent from the same Workhouse/Orphanage.
I will look at the boys who stayed in Quebec, he may indeed have stayed there as there is no evidence that they made it to Ottawa.
I am go grateful to this community.

Pontiac County is in Quebec but it is not far from Ottawa.

Makes me very sad for the young lad, as he probably ran from his situation. The words "In Care" were not always correct for some of these children. Have you sent for the BHC files on the British end of things, for your John ( as William?) or his brother?

Hello ReeseG,
For clarification…
I’m assuming your John also came to Canada? Was his first wife Matilda?

This is the basic information about John from the BHC site.
https://www.homechildrencanada.com/registry?id=56974
The page about James has no more than the ship entry

Well, James is certainly well hidden after his arrival in Canada. Had he passed away in Ontario or Quebec there should be a record of it. Name change is always a possibility.
It looks like he wasn’t the only missing boy. I can’t seem to find anything about the 4th boy Michael Mahoney that travelled with him. The other 2, Joseph North and John Kelleher are traceable, as noted earlier.

Hiya! John Fitzjohn also came to Canada from St Mary's Orphanage and married Mathilda who is my great-grandmother. I am not sure why the boys were separated or why James disappears.

Just chasing John Kelleher ... he's in Pontiac County, Quebec in the 1901 Census; born England, Roman Catholic, immigrated in 1880. Married with children. Married in 1894, parents unknown (according to church marriage record). Witnesses are Daniel Davis & Lizzie-Ann Donnelly.
-
Joseph North never marries. Found in Ancienne Lorette, Quebec after the 1891 Census. Birthplace varies between Quebec and England (1931 Census). Immigrated 1880.

Thank you! I am going to look in that area!

Hello again,
Still no sign of James after his arrival in Canada but there is a bit more info about him back in England. It looks like he may have known Michael Mahoney before they were sent oversees.
A bit about Michael first….
Michael was admitted to Stepney Workhouse 27 Apr 1869 age 4
Parish Whitechapel
Orphan
Child of Dennis a Cigar Maker
From 5 Guolston St (sp?)
Catholic
Discharged to Forest Gate School 07 Apr 1869 (this date doesn’t make sense…should perhaps be May)
Admitted to Stepney Workhouse from Forest Gate School 16 June 1869 age 5
Discharged to RC School Brentwood 21 June 1869 with a group of boys, but no James.
A group of 6 boys was admitted to Stepney Workhouse from Hammersmith 14 Dec 1871.
Among them…
James Fitzjohn age 6
Michael Mahoney age 7
Parish Whitechapel
Catholic
Discharged 26 Jan 1872 to F G S (assumed Forest Gate School)
About 4 weeks later, 28 Feb 1872, a group of 5 boys was brought up to Stepney Workhouse from Forest Gate School to be transferred to St Vincent’s School (RC) Westminster.
Among them…
James Fitzjohn age 6
Michael Mahoney age 7
They were discharged out 29 Feb 1872 (a leap year)
So it appears that James and Michael knew each other prior to sailing for Canada. Hasn’t helped find James in Canada yet…he is very well hidden. But a bit more info.
PB
Added:
A Michael Mahoney is in Brentwood Essex in the 1871 census.
Part of a large group of boys in the orphanage.
He is down as age 3 but there is a note that says precise ages of the children are unknown. 3 other boys he will eventually be sent to St Vincent’s with are also here (same names so assume same boys).
So looks likely he is the same Michael.

Well done P.B. (& everyone else) ♡ ♥ ♡ Always looking out for the BHC ♡ ♥ ♡
Having looked for ages, James Fitzjohn remains elusive.
While searching for both, this Michael Mahoney
(One of several found) looks pretty interesting!
However, it is NOT absolutely certain without relatives in Eng.to confirm.
PLUS- Only the father's name matches PolarBear's finds
Michael Mahoney is WAY too common a name in London alone
This proximity intrigued me- just south of the border from the other 2 lads
Map of arrival point - Quebec city - to Ottawa then north
to Grand Calumet locations for Joseph Kelleher & Joseph North
- Just south into U.S. Ogdensburg N.Y. we find a Michael Mahoney

I will inform them so that they may look at these extra finds...
Perhaps they might want to look through the GRO information & order some certs!

ADDING re: Michael
(Again, all may be red herrings- so many Mahoney in Workhouses, etc.)
The poor Irish, trying to get away from poverty & finding more...
