Title: Tindall family Ontario
Post by: HH on Thursday 05 September 24 19:16 BST (UK)
I'm hoping for some more information about the Tindall family who arrived in Canada from England. The individuals were Albert William Tindall b. 1855, wife Lucretia Amelia b 1857 and their children, Lilian, Percy, Howard, Beatrice, William, Flossie and Irene. My particular interest is William, b 1891 who married Charlotte Parm, b 1892 and their two children, Earle William b 1919 and Marjorie Pearl, b 1917. Ever grateful, Heather

Hi Heather,

To avoid duplicating efforts, what details do you already have regarding the family, once they arrived in Canada, please?

Have you searched https://www.familysearch.org/ for them in Canada?

Where in England did the family live?  Do you know when they sailed to North America?  Do you know Albert’s occupation, please?

Hello Lisa,
Thank you for your speedy response!
They were all born in Kent then travelled firstly to Chile in 1888. I don't know how long they were there but then went to Toronto and settled there. I have most of their deaths. Albert had had an Agricultural Machinery business in Faversham, Kent but sold it in 1886.
I haven't searched on the site you mention but will do that without delay. The branch I need to follow is William's. He was born in 1891 and married Charlotte Parm b. 1892. They had two children, Marjorie Pearl 1917 and Earle William 1919. I don't know when or where they died, as they may have moved permanently to the US. I have them travelling there in 1923. I know Earle died in Florida in 2006 but would like anything more you can discover about any of them, please.
Thank you, Heather

You haven't given any details of when they emigrated - clearly after 1897 so you should be able to find them on the ?? 1901/1911 Canadian censuses

They had a son William in Kent in 1888 who may have died in Chile as there is no death reg in England.  They then had your William in 1891

Marriage 1877 - she was Lucretia Thurston

Tindall/Thurston births

Amelia 1878 died 1879
Lilian 1880
Percy 1881
Howard 1883
Stewart 1885
Beatrice 1887
Ist William 1888
2nd William 1891
Flossie 1892
Irene 1897

Hello Carole,
Thank you for your reply. I already knew these details. In fact, the William b 1888 died at sea later that year on their way to Chile. He was buried at sea  :'(
I’m trying to find out more about their lives after they left England.

If your main interest is William have you looked for him on the Canadian 1911 or 1931 censuses or on any of the US censuses?

Censuses are available free on  www.familysearch.org

I’ve seen the 1931 census but I haven’t looked for the 1911. That will be my next search. Thank you. I would like to find out more about his two children and their families. Hoping someone on here will have some connection 🤞🏻

A tree on Ancestry says William b 1891 died 17.2.1978 Toronto

Lucretia died 24.10.1942 Toronto & Albert William 29.12.1939 Toronto

Earle William Tindall died Fort Myers Florida 16.12.2006

Charlotte Parm died 27.4.1984 Ontario but Earle also married Grace E Morrison

I have not looked at the link CaroleW kindly provided.  Heather, perhaps after you’ve had an opportunity to review the link you can ask unanswered questions (blanks that we may be able to fill in).

In the meantime, I’ve already started to have a quick look around…

The family is still in Maidstone, Kent, England in 1911 (per the 1911 census).
Percy and William sailed to Canada in 1912 on the Empress of Britain
It looks like William and Charlotte marred in 1915 (difficult to read the image).

Added:
Marjorie Pearl was born February 19, 1917, Toronto, Canada

I checked a couple of Ancestry trees; the trees did not include the 1921 Canadian census.

Perhaps you already have Albert W in 1921?  (I had trouble finding the family in 1921.)  Using Ancestry, I searched for Abe Mullen, Crawford (Street).  Three listings down from Mr. Mullen is part of the Tindall family.

Explanation:
According to the city directories, Albert W.’s residence in 1920 and 1921 was 71 Massey Street (Toronto).  In 1922, it was 79 Crawford.  The 1921 census has his address as 75 Crawford.

1922 Toronto City Directory

[Apologies for the confusing post; I was trying to sum up the findings - since I couldn’t find Tindall, I searched the 1921 census for Mullen, hoping that Tindall would be on the same image.]

That’s great, thank you. Funnily enough, I found a Lucretia TINDALL listed in the 1943 Greater Toronto street directory at Cedarville Ave. but ‘my’ Lucretia died in October 1942. Could it still be the same person?

Thank you both, Lisa and Carole. I’ve looked at all the links and managed to fill in a number of gaps. Still so many unanswered questions though!
When did Earle marry Grace? What more can be found about Melodie? I think his son David married so what do we know of that? And what was Earle doing in England in 1944?? Could he have been in the forces or at a conference?
I’m in touch with someone whose grandmother was William Tindall’s sister so lots of info from them.
I love puzzles! 😁

Regarding your question about the street directory…

It is my understanding that the directory for a given year was compiled and printed in the year prior so perhaps this would be why your Lucretia was still listed the year after her death?

Thank you. I had a feeling that might be the case. It’s an unusual name so it’s most likely to be her.

Hi,

I think this is a time frame for your William.

1923 he crosses the border headed to Philiadelphia
1931 census he is in East York with all his family
These two you have already.

Then
1940 Canada Voters Lists he is in Greenwood, Toronto
Tindall, William, electrician
Tindall, Mrs. William
Tindall, Miss Marjory

1957 and 1958 Voters Lists he is in East York, Toronto
Tindall, William, electrician
Tindall, Mrs. Charlotte

1965 Voters Lists he is in Rosedale, Toronto
Tindall, William, bldg. superintendent
Tindall, Charlotte

Adding deaths taken from online trees for William and Charlotte as someone may come along who has a sub. to newspapers and find the obits. for them.  Which may also help in finding Marjorie's married name/location, as Ontario marriages are privacy protected after 1940.

William's death as 17 Feb. 1978 in Toronto
Charlotte's death 27 April 1984 Scarborough, Ontario.

Marjorie must have married twice, but neither seem to be an Eric, as HH mentioned.

Her mom's obit refers to her as Mrs. W. J. Morrison, but here is what looks like a first marriage:

Good stuff bb.

Can you spot an obit for Earle William Tindall d. 16 Dec. 2006 Fort Myers, Florida.

I think he may have been a snow bird (Canadians who winter/retire in Florida). He appears a few times
in Canada Voters lists and is employed.
1974 Canada Voters List
Tindall, Earle, supervisor
Tindall, Grace, secretary
Tindall, David, microfilm operator

I'm drawing a blank for Earle and Grace, both in Florida and Ontario (in case there was an obit placed there).  Will keep hunting!

Where did you find the record for Earle going to England in 1944? He would be the right
age to serve in WW2.

Hello. I haven't found a record, that's the trouble, but we know he fathered a child in England who was born in February 1945. Do you know if there are any searchable military lists where I could look? HH

Hi,

We are starting to bump up against Canada's strict privacy rules. All passenger lists are privacy
protected after 1935. WW2 service records are also restricted with many rules that are required
to apply.

Using the Toronto Directories, Earle is listed in 1944 and 1945 as (act ser) active service.

This is really good, thank you. We are gradually finding out more and more about this family. I have a photo of Earle in England in 1945/1946 so guess he was here for a couple of years at least. Now I know he was on active service, I’ll see what records we have here in England that might reveal more.
So grateful for your help 😊 HH

Thank you for all the info on the Tindalls. I understand you can't put things on the thread about possibly living persons but could information be sent to my email? The obits have been very informative but, as always, leave several unanswered questions about who was who in their families.

Hi,

Is this child born 1945 still living?

DB
Hello DB,
I don't think I replied to your question- sorry. Yes, the child born in 1945 is still living, hence why I have been discreet. I have asked if replies to my personal email could be used to give more information.
Hope to hear from you again,
Heather

Hi Heather,

If they are links as in the previous replies from bbart, they can be sent via Rootschat's internal
personal messaging system. To use it, just under my name there is a green scroll, click on it
and it will bring you to the internal messaging. This way you can message privately between members and also a way to send your email address privately, if need be and keep it off the public part of this forum.

You can PM me who you are looking for or you can PM bbart, who has the access to the obits.
