I've been trying to decide whether it's caster or carter. The last letter is definitely an r so it should be s.

Do you have any other words that contains  s or r? Also - have you got info on a census for him?

Carter: driver of a horse-drawn vehicle used for transporting goods

Caster: a person who pours slip into moulds in the pottery industry, or another name for a Castorer.

Like Gadget - I can't decide whether it's caster or carter.

Seemingly a 'caster' made small bottles!

Carter is self explanatory and more common.

(Gadget just beat me to it! Story of my life).

I vote "caster" – compare the "st" of this word with the "rt" of the word shown from other occupation which looks like it must be "horticulture".

I'd still like to see more of the certificate.
.
Many people (self included) write different shapes for individual letters even in the same sentence.
