Title: Elizabeth Rough
Post by: glen11 on Tuesday 27 August 24 19:06 BST (UK)
Hello,i am trying to find the baptism/birth of Elizabeth Rough.
She was born 1780 Canongate,Edinburgh.Parents Peter and Janet(Dounie)I have searched Scotlands people and only found 2 of their children, so perhaps the others just haven't survived. Thank you.

Peter Rough and Janet Dawney / Dounie married in 1775 in Aberdeen.

I can only see these baptisms for two children:
William 1783
Agness 1789

One would expect to see a number of children baptised in the 1st 10 years of their marriage, so it would seem that baptisms for other children are probably missing.

There are these burials too. Possibly the same family?
Oct 1777 (St Peters Aberdeen) a "dead born child of Peter Rough labourer Denburn".

Nov 1780 (Canongate) Alexander Rough, age 1. Parent Peter Rough

July 1782 (Canongate) Margaret Rough, age 1. Parent Peter Rough.

July 1791 (Canongate) Helen Rough, age 4. Parent Peter Rough.

Might this be the baptism for Margaret?

Canongate 27 May 1781 Margrat Roch - father Petter Roch, mother Jannet Dounie.

Is Roch near enough to Rough? if nothing else this suggests it is worth looking at alternative spellings of both first names and surnames!

William

Thank you for looking. I paid on Scotlands people  to view those entries, wish you could buy a subscription,i know you can search for free, but i like to see the actual record, its a wonderful site. Poor Peter and Janet  lost nearly all their children. How can you die from decay as a baby? I have looked for Janets birth, no luck, On the marriage certificate it said she was resident in Aberdeen,so i thought thats where she came from. Thanks again

Wouldn't we all!

But you can't buy subscriptions to the corresponding resources (government official web sites) in England, Wales, New Zealand, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, Manitoba and no doubt many others that I haven't encountered; and all of these others are far more expensive than Scotland's People.

That may be correct for BMD post civil registration (whatever date that is for each of the countries you mention) but though I am unsure about the others you mention, for England and Wales parish registers for the time frame mentioned are available within subscriptions  - and quite often can be viewed for free via Family Search.
As glen11 was looking for baptisms in the late 1700s/early 1800s, the cost of civil BMD records doesn't seem to be relevant.
