Title: Hector Sutherland, baptised on the 15 May 1808 Tongue, Sutherland, Scotland
Post by: Isabel Griggs on Tuesday 27 August 24 05:14 BST (UK)
Hello, I am trying to find out more about Hector Sutherland bap: 15 May 1808, Tongue. His parents are given as George Sutherland and Jean McLeod/Macleod.

I found a son, Donald Hugh Sutherland bap: 29 Apr 1814...
Parish Register of Durness-Baptism 1764-1814 Page 60, No. 5-1814
George Sutherland, merchant, Clashneach ... and Jean M'Leod, Donald Hugh 29 Apr.

I have looked on Scotlandspeople but cannot find Hector.

UK, Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioner Soldier Service Records, 1760-1920
I found a Hector Sutherland aged 20 birthplace Tongue. Enlisted 1828, Discharged 1838, 86th Regt of Foot. No. 848. No parents' names given.

I found a Hector Sutherland in the 1841 Census living with the following family. I am hoping this is him and living with his sister's family? James and Jane Campbell nee Sutherland.
1841- James Campbell (Blacksmith) was living at Durin, Durness with his wife Jane Campbell nee Sutherland and children Janet 11yrs, Georgina 9yrs, William 7yrs, Ann 5yrs, Hector 3yrs and Robert 2 months old also in the home were Barbara Sutherland b: abt 1791 aged 50yrs (Agricultural Labourer) and Hector Sutherland b: 1811 aged 30yrs (pensioner).

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Isabel

Yes, I have found these. But I don't think that this the family/Hector that I am looking for.
George Sutherland and Jean McLeod, Island Roan had a son baptised on the 15 May 1808, Hector. I believe this Hector had a military service record entered 1828 discharged 1838. In 1941 he is living with his brother-in-law and sister James and Jane Campbell nee Sutherland as a pensioner.

But I do need to confirm this thought :-\

I don’t know what you want to confirm.
Do you have his military record?
Do you have him in 1851 census? 1861 census? Or a marriage record? Or Death certificate?

How are you related / connected to Hector Sutherland?
It is difficult to help you, as I am not clairvoyant.
Is the Hector Sutherland that you are trying to find the one who emigrated to Australia in 1853 with his family?
This looks like them in 1841 census, and that means that the Chelsea pensioner is not your man.

Oh I do wish that I was a clairvoyant 😊
I just want to confirm that I have the correct Hector in my tree.

I have a military record for a Hector Sutherland born in Tongue 1808. Joined 1828 aged 20 discharged 1838 aged 30.
There were no parents or wife documented on his record.

I have found a Hector Sutherland living with James and Jane Campbell nee Sutherland in Durness in 1841 as a pensioner.

James and Jane Campbell were my 2 x great grandparents. Hector was Jane's brother.

I have not found Hector in the 1851 or 1861 census. Or a marriage or death.

I  agree that the Hector that came to Australia is not the same Hector  b: 1808.
But I haven't confirmed that to my satisfaction. And there are a lot of trees on Ancestry with the Hector who did go to Australia with the parents of my Hector 1808, Tongue.

I always try to get the correct information and buy the certificates.

I don't think that this the family/Hector that I am looking for.
This Hector seems to be an exact match for your original question (son of George S and Jean M(a)cLeod, baptised in 1808), so why do you think he isn't the one you are looking for?

Am I right in thinking that that you are looking for a Hector Sutherland who emigrated to Australia? If so, when did he emigrate? Was he accompanied by a wife and family, and if so what were their names and approximate dates of birth?

BTW never, ever, trust anything you find in an online tree, especially on Ancestry, MyHeritage and umpteen other commercial web sites. Just because there are multiple trees with the same information doesn't mean they are correct; they could all be people who have just copied information from one tree with an error.

There are two Hector Sutherlands in north-west Sutherland in 1841.

One, age given as 35, in Achnahuaigh with wife Margaret and several children. Adults' ages in 1841 were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest 5 years, so he would have been born in 1801/1806. Number 1 is still in Durness in 1851, 1861, 1881 and 1891, described as a grocer, born in Durness, with wife Margaret and several children. It looks as if he died in Durness in 1891 aged 85, mother's maiden surname Morrison.

The second, age given as 30, in the household of James Campbell and Jane Sutherland, so he was born 1806/1811. He is described as a pensioner, which at that time meant that he was retired from the army, so I think you can be pretty sure that he is the on with the military service record.
