Whilst researching my partners family we have come across these photos , the one is from a wedding in 1944 and the other from early 1970s. Do you think they are the same person?
-
And the 1944 pic :
-
Certainly a lot of similarities - my only doubt is the ears which seem flatter in the second picture.
-
Like ToH, I see that there are similarities but I don't think they're the same person.
In addition to the ears, the eyes of the younger man are more deep set and the nose is narrower. Could they be brothers or cousins or...?

I would guess they are related but not the same person.
-
The 1944 man looks about 35, and the early 70s man does not look much older (perhaps 47/48) despite an almost 30 year gap between the 2 pics.
Also the chins look slightly different shape as well as ears flatter on the first pic.
-
In my opinion it is definitely the same person. The upper lip is so individual.

I agree with Primrose11. I think that it's because of the way his face has filled out that in the later photo his ears look flatter and his eyes less deep-set.
-
They could be the same person…there are similarities (in addition to what has already been mentioned):
The hairline, the space between the eyebrows, the lower lip on his right looks slightly higher than his left side, and his right eye appears to be slightly smaller than his left eye. Also, the area between the end of his upper lip and above the chin (on the right, as we look at the photo) looks very similar.
Perhaps he doesn’t appear to have aged very much due to the fullness of his face. (When my mum intentionally lost weight, she looked quite a bit older even though she only lost 20 or so pounds. Perhaps when one gains weight, the opposite is true - a more youthful face.)
-
The features are similar but the shape of the head is different, also the ears. But I am sure that the receding hair in the earlier photo would have receded further 25 years later !
-
mmm -
-
I think they're the same man. The hairline looks the same to me, and he seems to have kept his parting in the same place.
-
In the b&W, side by side comparison, the bone structure of the face is so similar and it's just that there is 'more flesh on the bones' of the older man. I'm now thinking that it is the same man.

I think it is the same man too.

Thanks all. It is confusing isn’t it.
The black and white pic is of a man known as Bill Coley ( his wife Florence is by his side on the uncropped version)
We have been trying to work out if he was Reggie Coleys best man on the wedding pic ( hopefully attached)
From speaking to family Bill Coley was older than Reggie who was born in 1916.
So trying ( and failing to prove or disprove whether his real name is John William Coley born in 1899)
If it’s the latter then the colourised best man is 45/46 in the wedding pic and approx 80 in the black and white pic 😂 need to try and obtain death certs / dates of Bill Coley and wife Florence ( no other details known , family think she was born in Malta)
The other fly in the ointment is that Reggie referred to Bill ( in the wedding pic) as his brother.
Reggie was bought up believing his lily coley 1896-1936 was his aunt ( it was his mom, she died in Burghill Asylum from “insanity” according to the death cert and asylum records I have got, and he thought George and Sarah Coley were his parents, whereby they were actually his grandparents. Reggie was born when his mother was late teenage and unmarried

I don’t think they are the same man. Ears don’t change much , certainly not the basic shape.
-
For my money, the 1970s photo looks more like the groom than the best man !
-
There’s more than a passing resemblance, Reggie’s son ( my fiancés father) says he looks like Reggie, however Reggie died in 1986 and we have lots of photos so can 100% say it’s not Reggie
Reggie in the mid 1980s just before he died

I wonder if any Rootschatters have any software that could sharpen the images of the 1944 and early 1970s man, and enhance any facial features such as forehead lines, to see if they match up. I know this has been done with gravestone photos before, where the almost illegible writing has been enhanced.
-
The problem i that the younger man is from a much smaller photo with low pixels per ins (dpi) so enlargements just increase the blurring - see the the two pics that the Op and I put up, Also, to sharpen them, there is a danger of using AI software that often changes the features.
I'll see if I can bring up the younge man without AI.
-
There are no micro feature showing as it is low resolution so there are no wrinkles etc. to bring out.
AI should not be used for this type of comparison.
-
I've done an overlay of the younger man on the other one with 50 % opacity.
PS - I've used this technique on here many times in the past
-
Appreciate the comments and help 👍🏻
-
Same squint.

Antony ~
Is there any chance of you doing a really good scan - say 300 dpi. - of Reggie or are all the ones that you have of him blurred?
-
Hi, I would be taking a photo on my IPhone of a photograph in an album I’m afraid , I don’t know how clear the others are, they are at my fiancés dads house ( he’s Reggie’s son) I can find out tho
-
Do you know of anyone with a scanner?
-
I don’t , I don’t know anyone with a printer either these days 😂 I may be able to sneak a scan of a photo at work and email it to myself
-
Hi Antony1977,
Hope this helps! I may have added a few scars in the process but definitely clearer photos. I'll have to get back to you on which online editor I used as I went through a few to find a free one and then had to manually remove some lines. If someone can resize these for me I would be grateful! I thought I had made them to the correct pixels but maybe not!
Kind regards,
Andrea

Hi Andrea - did you use an AI program as they should not be used for comparisons as they use a database of close matched features to insert into the original. Thus eyes, etc. are not an enhancement of the original.
-
Hi Gadget,
I didn't think so but I may well have. Thanks for bringing that to my attention as I didn't really think about that at the time! Happy to remove if needs be!
Regards,
Andrea

Hi again Andrea
It might well be an AI program as it's done it's done something odd to the younger man's mustache and the other features seem far too clear for ordinary progs.
I can't do much at the moment as I have a cannula in my left hand (I'm left handed) :-X

Hi Gadget and Antony1977,
I've requested for my post with photos to be removed. Apologies for adding them having possibly used an AI editor.
Kind regards,
Andrea
