Hi All,
I'd like to get some thoughts and suggestions into my research of Edward Trahar. Ancestry insists that his full name is Edward "Woolcock" Trahar and was born in 1811 - however he's never referred to as "Woolcock" in any of the baptism or marriage records that I've seen. I think there's a chance he was born in 1770, but there are also a few issues with that...
Here's what I know:
-1827 - Marries Jane Underwood in Bermondsey, London [Record: Marriage Banns]
-1828 - Daughter Mary Ann born in Bermondsey, London [Occupation Carpenter; Record: Baptism]
~1831 - Son Edward John born in Tower Hamlets, London [Occupation Carpenter; Record: Baptism]
~1835 - Son Henry born in Tower Hamlets, London [Occupation Carpenter; Record: Baptism]
-1840 - Jane Trahar (now a widower) marries John Schwarman [Record: Marriage Cert]
-1841 - Jane is living with John and 7 children, including Mary, Edward and Henry [Record: Census]
So it seems Edward Trahar must have died between 1835 and 1840. I've looked on GRO and found the death of an Edward Traher(sp) in 1838. As GRO records start in 1837 there's a chance this is the wrong one and the right one died between 1835-1837.
I have a copy of the death certificate for this Edward Traher (attached):
-1838 - Edward Traher dies at 68 due to "trauma/tumour in the face" in Falmouth, Cornwall [Occupation Shoe Maker; Record: Death Cert].
I can't quite transcribe the information about the witness. I think it says "The mark of Jane <something> wife of a sailor <then some other stuff>". I wonder who she is and why she is the witness to the death?
If this death cert is indeed him then it means:
- 57 when he got married (seems old for the time!)
- 65 when last child was born (seems old for the time!)
- Occupations don't match
- Was in Cornwall when he died
So what do you all think? Which Edward married Jane Underwood in 1827? The Edward Trahar of 1811 or the one of 1770?
-
I think the name is Jane Lewarne.
I doubt that the death certificate is your Edward :-\
ADDED In 1851 there is a Jane T Lewarn in Falmouth, a Mariners wife living in Porhan(?) Street
-
Yeah the ages difference would be quite a lot plus the different occupation. I guess he must have died between 1835-1837 or maybe his death was recorded under a version of Trahar I haven't tried. It's a shame as I'd like to have found a link back to Cornwall. The family consensus is that there is one - I just can't find it!

Seems a bit of a coincidence that there is also an Edward Traher 58 a carpenter not born in county and wife Grace 57 living in Bermondsey 1841 who may be your Edwards parents as sons often follow the same occupation as their fathers. Or they could be some other relation for example an uncle.
Ancestry transcribed surname as Grabar, resident at Gourlstons buildings

They are at 17 Ernest Street Bermondsey in 1851, he is born Cornwall. Her place of birth may be St Gluvias, but it is hard to read.

There is a marriage in 1802 between Edward Traher of Perranarworthal and Grace Nicholas at St Gluvias
Can you find any children born to this couple?

Thanks for those clues! I've had a look and it's pretty clear to the human eye that it's Trahar. How you got there from Grabar is impressive! It didn't come up on any of my searches.
I'll pull on this thread and see where it leads...

A few further thoughts....
.
There is a Jane Trahar age 2, niece living with the Schwarman family in 1851. She must be related to Edward.
From GRO
Birth reg TRAHAR, JANE ELIZABETH mother maiden name TRAHAR
GRO Reference: 1848 D Quarter in SAINT GEORGE (IN THE EAST) Volume 02 Page 116
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/login.asp
This would seem to be the Jane Elizabeth chr at St John the Baptist Hoxton Middlesex on 22 Jan 1862, dob 22 Sept 1848, daughter of John, deceased Mariner and Mary Ann. (Gut feeling is John is a made up father)
Might be worth investing in her birth cert to see who Mary Ann Trahar was.
The witnesses at the 1827 marriage to Jane Underwood, were Elizabeth JAMES and John Wheeler.
An Elizabeth Trahar married William JAMES on 6 may 1823 at Saint George The Martyr: Borough High Street, Southwark. Witnesses William Stevens, Temperance Stevens. I think the Stevens were a married couple as there are a few baptisms to a pair of this name in Southwark. William was a hair dresser. Temperance was nee Williams. May just have been family friends.

I've just been looking at Elizabeth Traher (~1805) as there is an 1805 baptism record for her in Perranarworthal. It lists her parents as Edward Traher and Grace (~1785).
For Grace Nicholas there is a 1787 baptism record in St Gluvias which is a pretty close match to the ages given in the 1841 and 1851 census's and the location listed as her birth.
For Edward there is a 1782 baptism record in Perranarworthal where the Pallot's Marrige Index says he is from. It list his name as Edward "Benbow" Trahar
No record to link Edward and Grace to my Edward as yet. Though it seems likley Elizabeth is either his sister or cousin. Though one Ancestry tree list him as the son of Grace Nicholas with a birth of 01 Jun 1803. Unfortunately there's no record to back this up!
-
I've been talking to someone on Ancestry who believes that Edward and Elizabeth were siblings. They have Edward as being born in Cornwall on 1 Jun 1803. Unfortunately there's no records for it! Just information from other trees...
Given that Elizabeth was baptised in Perranarworthal, Cornwall, does anyone know if there's a way for me to read through the actual baptism image scans? There could be a transcription error and I have a rough date to scroll around.

Thanks for this. I've checked both the

In 1811 there's an Edward Trahar baptised in Perranarworthal to Hopson Woolcock and Mary Trahar. This is the Edward that ancestry think is correct but I'm not convinced. It would mean he was 16 when he married Jane Underwood (who would have been 26!).
Not sure where to go from here. The registers don't look like they have gaps. I suppose I could check other Parish's in the area? Maybe see if there are any newspaper clippings for a baptism? No idea if that would have been a common thing at the time.

These hints come from peoples trees and not documentary evidence so you are right to query it. Bear in mind it was a baptism and not a birth so he may have been born a few years earlier.
Have you tried tracing Mary Trahar to see whether she married.
ADDED
Have you located the marriage licence for Edward and Jane

Ah yeah good point! So he may well have been older. I have the marriage certificate for Edward and Jane (on ancestry):

- 16 Aug 1827; Edward Trahar (Bachelor) and Jane Underwood (Spinster); Witnesses: Elizabeth James and John Wheeler; Location: Saint Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey
As you mentioned earlier the witness Elizabeth is potentially Edwards sister or cousin. No ages or indication of ages given though.
I hadn't looked into Mary actually, I'll do that next!

Mary Ann (1828) is Edwards (1803/1811) daughter. She had a daughter called Jane (1849) who is the one that appears as Henry Trahar's (1835) niece in the 1851 census. Jane has the surname Trahar as Mary Ann didn't marry until 1857.
