Title: Daniel Diggle 1725-1768
Post by: Sued123 on Saturday 17 August 24 13:28 BST (UK)
Hi, I've hit a  brick wall. I'm trying to trace my husbands 5th great grandad. Daniel Diggle  born 1725-1768. He was born as far as I know in or  around Basford, Nottingham. I'm presuming he was born about 1725 but haven't found a baptism record for him. I'm also trying to find the name of his parents to move further back. Any help would be appreciated. Sue

There is this one, image online

Gender   Male
Event Type   Baptism
Baptism Date   23 Dec 1759

Edit - took it to mean between those dates, but you mean that was his life span. So no help.

I'm working on the basis that he may have married Phoebe Barton under the name "Daggley". Can you confirm?

Their 1745 marriage on FindMyPast has "Ragnall" as the residence of both - marriage place Radford.

I have the marriage as 1 dec 1745 and his surname as Diggley, but yes it was in Radford.

So, you are searching for Daniel, age unknown at death in 1768?

Yes that is right, his burial is registered as at St. Leodagarius, Basford, but I can't seem to find a baptism or his parents. He married in Radford to Pheby Barton in 1745

I'd spotted the '68 death.
The marriage record on FindMyPast (transcript only) has "Ragnall" as residence of both.

I find it is always useful to list out all the names of the children of the person whom you are investigating, as naming patterns can be useful pointers towards parentage.

In this case:
Mary, James (perhaps the father's name?), Abraham, Nathan (unusual), Samuel Ishewood (unusual), Phoebe, Ann, Daniel, John, William.

There is a Daniel Diggle, baptised on 1st July 1720 in Eccles, Lancashire, to James Diggle of Pendleton.

This Daniel also had an older brother called Nathan.

Likely marriage for parents:

James Diggles, of Eccles, married Mary Usherwood on 2nd January 1704 at Manchester St. Mary. Could Mary's surname have inspired Samuel's middle name?

I'd seen that one, but wasn't it unusual for someone to travel so far. I've found Phebys baptism his wife on 12 Apr 1728 In St Mary's Nottingham.

I'm not an expert, but if people needed work and there was none available then I suppose they had to look elsewhere. I've read other discussions on here about how people often travelled further than we might expect.

I had a 14-year-old ancestor sent all the way from a tiny farm in Wiltshire to the middle of London in 1715 to do an apprenticeship with a pastry chef. One would think there were chefs closer by but apparently it was family tradition to send the boys off almost 90 miles away to London on their own to learn a trade. Character building!

I do think the Nathan and Isherwood/Usherwood connection is unlikely to be coincidence, but I could be wrong.

Ok, thank you for that, I know there is a lot of Diggles in Lancashire. lve not come across a DNA match that far up and I know there is a place called Diggle as well in Yorkshire. I'll start a new tree looking at the Diggles from Lancashire and see if I can make a connection.
