Title: Awarding of medals - Boer War
Post by: namatse on Friday 16 August 24 16:00 BST (UK)
I had two relatives who served in the Boer War, does anyone know if Service medals were automatically sent to soldiers or if they had to apply for their medals ?

Thanks

I stand to be corrected but I believe they were issued automatically.

You can view the medal rolls on Ancestry to see what modals and clasps your  relatives were entitled to.

I already have records regarding which medals they would have been awarded.  I am trying different avenues to establish where these relatives were living in the early 1900's.  They were both born in Ireland but I cannot find them in the 1901 census as they were in SA with their regiments. "Thinking outside the box" then I thought maybe if medals had been sent to them, somewhere there must be address details.  Hope this makes sense.
Thank you

My own grandfather, although  from Kent was posted to Ireland when he came back from the Boer War, I have a photo of him wearing his but no idea where he received it. Unfortunately I have no idea what became of it. As he died in service his records do not survive either.
