Hi,
This place name is in the 1861 census. We know he lived around Irthington, but can't find his 1791 baptism yet..mostly because it's not clear where he is from.
Does this place name ring any bells with anyone?
thanks^

Looks like Cumberland St Mary?
-
That's what I thought too, I can't figure out what the final word is^ ???
-
I read it as Horns, but that doesn't help unless it is an abbreviated form of Hornsby perhaps?

And no one can help either because you have not given a name.
-
Oh thank you for offering that, but I am fortunately able to search myself in records and registers…I’m just not sure what this specific place name might be and so it would help narrow my search down

What place name is given in other Censuses?
-
Bit of a long shot – in ~1871 there are newspaper reports of the establishment, in Carlisle, of St Mary’s Home for Penitent Women. (St Mary’s is a Carlisle parish I believe). Perhaps your dates will rule this out?
And clearly this would be an odd place of birth to declare in a census.
-
'Home' could be better than 'Horns' but may still be an abbreviation since the enumerater is already out of space. Jennifer are there other examples on the page of a final 'e' by that enumerator to compare it with?
What have Ancestry and FindMyPast transcribed it as?

We were thinking it could be something like that (although there is nothing elsewhere to suggest it^) but also agree... it's odd to use this on a census :)

The final letter has the look of a 'g' about it, but I'm not sure if that's me reaching for something familiar.
It's transcribed as St Marys Horng.

He gives Cumberland, Abbey in 1851. Could it be a reference to Holmcultram Abbey, Abbeytown, (now St Mary's Church)?
Thus it might be St Mary's Holme?

(Alan posted while I was typing, but I'll post this anyway.)
With a name to search with I've found him in the 1851 census, and I think the 1861 probably does say 'Home' - but that's not exactly what it means.
The 1851 census gives his birthplace as "Cumberland Abby", and putting the two together I've come up with Holm Cultram, which is also known as Abbey Holme; and the ancient abbey (now the parish church) is dedicated to St Mary.
-
On the 1847 tithe map of the parish of Holme Cultram the village in the vicinity of St Mary’s Church is simply labelled “Abbey” (i.e. not Abbey Town (Victorian OS maps) or Abbeytown (modern name).

Thank you (for both messages^^) that's super helpful and also confirming the names of places we weren't completely sure about.

I was so convinced that we had found it, then I went looking for newspaper items and I found this:
Carlisle Patriot; 22nd April 1826.
DEATHS
...
On Thursday last, at St Mary Holme, Abbey Lanercost, Lydia, eldest daughter of the late Mr Thos. Tallintier, aged 33.
This is NE of Carlisle just beyond Brampton, much closer to Irthington.
-
That's a brilliant find^ and looks very very plausible doesn't it?^ Thank you^^ :)

Good find, Alan.

From GenUKI (https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/CUL/HolmCultram):
"HOLME-CULTRAM, (or Abbey Holme), a parish in the ward of Allerdale-below-Derwent, county Cumberland, 6 miles N.W. of Wigton, 9 N.E. of Aspatria, and 15 E. of Maryport. Abbey Holme is its post town."

St Marys Home, for fallen women carlisle

As soon as I saw this I thought of St Mary's Holme, Lanercost. At school I was in same class as a lad who lived there. It is about half a mile upstream from Lanercost Abbey.
