Apologies for if I am using this forum incorrectly. I haven't used a forum in years. 😄
I'm wondering if anyone has any information on the Fairy family of Horncastle.
Specifically those who are descendants of Abigail Fairy or any information on her.
Abigail Fairy Born in Horncastle in 1868
Married Christopher Locking in 1888
Died in 1917
Parents were George Fairy 1833 and Matilda Smith.
I know that at some point Abigail lived with her parents on West Street in Horncastle when she was a young child. It's where she met her husband and where they both went to school. However I can't find any other information of her or any of her family in Horncastle.
George was a sawyer
Thank you

Welcome to RootsChat!
I'm not sure whether you have already subscribed to any of the major genealogy subscriptions sites, but a good free option is https://www.familysearch.org/, which offers access to most of the same materials but with no cost, just registration required.
If you search for "Abigail Locking" with a birthplace of "Horncastle, Lincolnshire", her entries in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 census will pop up. On these entries, you will find her with her husband, Christopher, and her various children.
Queenie :)
EDIT: Ashtone got there first!

A lot of trees on Ancestry.
Prior to 1871, her parents, George and Matilda, were in Yelden, Bedfordshire.

I have a feeling in my searches around that they may have been romany travellers. Matilda's family were at least.
Thank you

I can see no indication of that on Census or Georges occp.

There is an article in the Lincolnshire Chronicle on 18th March 1864, which indicates that Matilda was a Romany.
She was in front of the magistrates for being drunk and riotous on the Boston Road.
"he is described as "MATILDA FAIREY alias GIPSEY TILL, of Horncastle,"
Other times in front of the magistrates in 1881, 1889 and 1896.
Another in 1873 when "George Fairy, of Horncastle, charged by his wife Matilda Fairy with using threats to her, was discharged."

In the Horncastle News on24th September 1932, there is a lengthy article about Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Fairy, well known and respected residents of Horncastle.
It quotes: "Mr. Fairy, who is 71 years of age, is a son of the late Mr. George Fairy, sawyer, who came to Horncastle in 1860 from Bedfordshire, to work on the restoration of St. Mary's church. He found a wife at Horncastle and settled in the town."
Father, George perhaps less well respected.
Stamford Mercury on 20th August 1897: "George Fairy, a lame and elderly man, living in Hopton Street, Horncastle, was charged on remand with assaulting Emily Webster,..."
Out of doors, "The prosecutrix quarrelled with a woman named Alice Gentle with whom the prisoner lives.." "Fairy interfered and struck Webster over the head with the heavy stick which he uses to assist him in walking."
He couldn't pay the fine and was sent to prison for 14 days.

Thank you! I thought as much as had found snippets elsewhere that hinted at a possibility. This is amazing and much appreciated! As are all the other responses from people!
