Title: Jane Hicks (Hixs) circa 1775
Post by: Fitz1 on Wednesday 07 August 24 07:09 BST (UK)
I am trying to find a baptism record for her.
It is thought she was born in Oxfordshire. MAY be in the Ramsden or Shipton Under Wychwood area.
She married as Jane Hixs to William Dickson(AKA Dixon) 10 Oct 1802 in Shipton Under Wychwood, Oxfordshire.
Any information and assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you garstonite and CoIC,
Garstonite
As far as I can tell William and Jane it is thought they MAY of had at least 4 children.
They are all of Ramsden, but I am uncertain about Jane and Ann!
Mary 1803 baptised 23 Oct 1803 Shipton Under Wychwood (of Ramsden).
Jane 1808 baptised Northleigh 11 Sep 1808 (of Ramsden) Northleigh is approx. As the crow fly's is about 2 miles from Ramsden.
Ann (Dixson) 1811 baptised Leafield 24 Mov 1811 (of Ramsden) Leafield is about 50 miles from Ramsden.
Elizabeth 1813 baptised 19 Oct 1813 Shipton Under Wychwood (of Ramsden).

I have no death date for William. There is no mention of him on the 1841 with his wife Martha, and on the 1851 Census his wife Martha is indicated as a Widow and Pauper

CoIC
I have no information regarding “William was admitted into the church after being baptised at St Michaels Bristol.” Can you tell me where this originates from please?

I have printed all of your replies and will recheck with the records I have.

Again thank you both

Yet in 1841, there is a Martha, with Eliza, Jason, Alfred and Emanuel (which fits the children William had with Martha).
Are there two Williams who both had a daughter Caroline in 1833 or has William taken up with a lady called Mary, and is living with her children and his eldest daughter?

Jason Dixon s/o William married Eliza Millin in Nov 1851. Is the Jason Millin (lodger) with Martha in 1851, a relative of his future wife ? Jason Dixon appears to be in Oxford gaol in 1851.

I think there has to be two Williams. There is a marriage of a William Dixon to a Mary Wheeler on 27 Mar 1815 at S under W. Witnesses John Wheeler and Anne Dixon. I think he is the one who was b in Ramsden in 1776 as in 1851 census and died in 1856.

As to the William (who married Martha): looks like he died before 1841, dob and birthplace unknown.

I thought I might have found our William's death in S under W on 6 Jan 1841, but he was 87 (GrO record agrees with age). That seems far too old to have fathered a child in 1839 and to have first marriage in 1802.

My error I'm afraid on Ancestry. Last entry, Jane baptised 1808 is correct and it states of Ramsden. Parents William & Jane Dixon.

An entry just above, on a very small page in Oxfordshire baptisms, is the reference to William, I have just read it again, a different Wm & Jane.
If you look for Jane above you will see it.

Apologies Colin, I should have gone to Spec Savers!

Thank you LizzieL and ColC.

There are several Williams. And with Dixon being spelt in quite a few different spellings, unravelling the details has not been easy. Regarding “Jason Dixon s/o William married Eliza Millin in Nov 1851. Is the Jason Millin (lodger) with Martha in 1851, a relative of his future wife? Jason Dixon appears to be in Oxford gaol in 1851” Jason Dixon was my 2nd great-grandfather. He was indeed in Oxford gaol in 1850 and then again in 1851. Between 1852 and 1857, there were at least 5 court cases he was involved. A bit of a Jack the lad!!

No need to Apologize. Let’s face it some of these documents are not easy to read. I am just grateful for any replies.
I will print all comments and review accordingly.
My thanks to both of you.
