Hi Rootschatters, it's been a while. ;D
On the Web site FreeBMD in the UK I have an entry for a birth search using mother's maiden name and District. I found the birth I was looking for and another name I wasn't expecting directly underneath.
Both names are the same Surname, same mother's Maiden name, same Qtr and year, same Vol 6b and Page 858. However one is Page 858 and the other is 858a
Does the "a" mean a twin?
Thanks, Red

Were there 2 different given names with the same surname and same mother's maiden name.
Is that what you mean?
Being in the same quarter does not necessarily mean they were born on the same day

Hi Sue, yes given names were Alan, (the one I was looking for) the other Michael.

So far as I know, the suffix "a" on the page number does not mean there were twin registrations. I think the suffix "s" means there was an alteration to the page, not sure about "a".
Modified to add:
Just looking on the FreeBMD faq
https://www.freebmd.org.uk/search-faq.html#pagenosuffix
A page number suffix could be due to late return (unlikely I would have thought in your case in 1957). Note the faq about twins is the next question.

I have never seen a twin birth with suffix "a"?
That includes the births of myself and my twin brother, the births of my twin daughters, and the births of my twin granddaughters.

Thanks everyone. Doubt too that it means twin. The search continues.

Could it be an amendment.
Freebmd gives you the opportunity to look at the original page that the transcript has been taken from by clicking the spectacles alongside the entry, has one of the entries been added to the page.
If you are referring to a 1950's birth it looks as though the childs names have been amended from Michael A(lan) to Alan M(ichael)
