Hi
I am looking for information on the Martin/Walsh family buried on Scattery Island.
The headstone, which lays flat, is just by the south wall of the church, and contains the following information:
IHS
Erected by Bridget Martin in memory of her beloved husband John Martin, Cappa (?) who died March 2nd 1873 - aged 80........ Also listed on the headstone are:
Bridget Martin
Daughter Bridget
Catherine Walsh
James Walsh RNVR (Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve)
My interest in this family centres on James, or is it Michael Joseph? read on!!
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records state that Gunner Michael Joseph Walsh, HMS Vivid, Royal Navy, who died on 3 October, 1917, is buried in this grave, and that his wife, Mrs. Walsh, lived at Cappa Pier, Kilrush.
Clearly, there is something not quite right here, were James and Michael Joseph the same person, (I know from marrying into an Irish family, that children were often given one name but were known by another!!) or were they brothers and the records have got mixed up or what!!
Any help gratefully accepted.
Regards
Ian Chambers

.....were James and Michael Joseph the same person
No, they were different people.
James Walsh was in the RNVR which is different from Michael Joseph Walsh being in the Royal Navy.

Great finds. Well done all.

Thank you so much for all of your help, the info here plus gained on another site, make it fairly obvious that the man remembered on the headstone is not the man that died in 1917.
I will be contacting the CWGC asking them to erect a new headstone in the graveyard for Michael. Once I get a response from them I will post it on here.
Once again, thanks for your help.

At St Senan RC Church, Kilrush, Co Clare.
Just to be super, super precise. It is written as a T on the birth record being referred to .....you can see similar Ts (Torpey) and a diferent capital J for a James (Clancy) further down. On the marriage records the J is written in the same way as the capital 'J' on the births
But whether it was correctly written as a T on the birth certificate is a different story.....I think not bearing mind the records since found particularly the marriage record when we always say those completing it are more likely to ensure it is correct....always exceptions though!
:)
Well done to all those who found the details that enable corrections/additions to be made to remember these ex-servicemen.

Bit confused Find A Grave has a record of Michael (no photo) but not the other Walsh headstone with James etc.
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/272886027/michael_joseph-walsh
Would this have come from the CWGC record ( the wording gives that impression ) or from a headstone in the graveyard?
Perhaps it would be worth contacting the contributor if you haven’t already.

It looks as though it was only added yesterday - 25th July.
