Title: marriage in Basingstoke in 1885
Post by: chempat on Thursday 25 July 24 12:42 BST (UK)
Robert Philpot(t) married Catherine Pithers in Basingstoke in 1885.  I cannot see a record of the marriage in Ancestry parish records for Basingstoke so just thought it was at one of the Methodist or other churches.
However, their Golden wedding anniversary was reported in the newspaper of November 16th 1935 stating it had been held at the Parish Church.
Is this just incorrect recollection of place or the reporter just making assumptions?  (They had both been baptised in C of E churches.)
Thoughts, please.

Hi, Ann,

Yes, that is the basic record of their marriage but does not state which church it was held at - which was my interest.

Marriage Locator say it’s between Stevenson St. Nicholas and Andover St. Mary. So it was probably either in a Nonconformist Church or a Register Office.

First child born in Winchester area so they could have moved around and missed out for whatever reason and used a nonconformist church, and then forgot about it.

Basingstoke Registration District appears to contain over 40 parishes. Are there any other clues in the newspaper article that might indicate which parish church is being referred to?

Hi,

Theoretically Basingstoke Parish Church should mean the one in Basingstoke, no other clues in article, and they did move around a bit.  I cannot find in any of the Hampshire marriages that Ancestry have on-line, nor in any of the Banns, so non-conformist or otherwise most likely and memory lapse.  Not important enough to buy marriage certificate.

Thanks
