Title: The name of Miles Swift
Post by: jean Sandra on Wednesday 11 August 04 10:23 BST (UK)
For a  while I have been researching an ancestor of mine with the name of Miles Swift. He was born in Chesterfield about 1795 and moved with other family members to Northampton and Stockport. He was an iron moulder by trade and his brothers were in related occupations
The name however crops up in Yorkshire so if anyone has come across it I would be be grateful for any information as it is it could be  a family name.

Do you know anything of a Miles Swift who married Rebecca Helliwell in 1866 - Eccleshall?  Just a long shot!

Hi Sandie,

no, I don't know of him but I would love to find out more.

My fist Miles Swift was born in Chesterfield which isn't far from Sheffield really.
The name was used for a number of generations by Miles and his brothers and their offspring. This made me wonder about other people called  Miles Swift in Yorkshire & Derbyshire. the name is so unusual I'm sure they must be related.
I would love information about any of them, if you don't mind.

Regards

Sandie,

I believe I may know of your Miles Swift who married Rebecca  in 1866.

I think he was the son of William and Susannah Swift from Brampton Chesterfield.

If so William and my Miles swift were brothers.

Your Miles I believe died in 1867 and was buried at Wardsend cemetery 5 Feb 1867 aged 41.

Was your Miles a grate fitter?

If so he was in Leicester with his widowed mother in 1841, Derby with his widowed mother in 1851 and Sheffield in 1861.

William and Susannah were in Chesterfield area until at least 1828.

They had following children
James bap 5/2/1815
Francis bap 11/6/1819
William bap 4/5/1817
Elizabeth (Betsy) bap 16/1/1822
Miles bap 22/8/1824
Joseph bap 6/7/1828
and possibly others.
They possibly moved to Sheffield after this.

I don't know when William died but must have been before 1841 census when Susannah was in Leicester with her family.

Regards

Jean
