Title: DIVEN brothers - NSW help
Post by: garydevine on Monday 22 July 24 02:32 BST (UK)
Hello,

I’m trying to find information on three brothers who emigrated from Scotland sometime before WWI.

John Watson b. 1885, Charles b. 1886 and William b. 1892. All born in Stranraer Scotland to Charles Diven and Margaret Watson. John did marry in 1911 in Scotland to a woman names Jessie I think but not entirely sure. I don’t know when exactly they’d of came over or if they had families eventually it’s literally all he info I have unfortunately, in 1901 John was an apprentice plasterer and Charles was an apprentice ham curer. Their mother died giving birth to her 15th child in 1907 and their dad died in 1939 in Scotland, all of the other siblings died in Scotland. These there are unaccounted for and was told it’s because they went to Australia

Any help would be amazing

Gary

If you do a name search for John Watson Diven at NAA there are some military records for his sons.

Wow

Thank you all so much!

Wasn't expecting such a quick response but forgot about the time difference haha!

Thank you I just get lost when it comes to trying to find Australian records. Was doing South Africa last week and it was taking me round in circles lol

Are there any records on when and what ship Charles and William went over?

Also the record for the marriage is Charles he married Jessie's sister :)

This may not be the right track but I have known of many Diven, Devine families etc from Ireland.

Some of my Irish family moved to Stranraer in Scotland before emigrating elsewhere to NZ/US. So it may have been a place for chain migration from parts of Ireland. I have not done any research on Stranraer to see what drew them there from Ireland.

So going further back from the Divens in Stranraer may involve hours of fun in Irish records!  ;D

My own Devines are from Ireland in Leitrim and are first recorded in Ayr but this is my aunts tree I'm doing but yeah it's definetly an Irish thing. The furtherest I can get back is to a Dicen born in Ireland 1792 and coming over in the mid 1820s with his wife and in Stranraer they loved on Little Ireland which was a name of the street all occupied by Irish families and then next to it was Little Dublin. So was full of Irish settlers. I've come across Diven being soelt Devine a couple times and wonder if it really was Devine or if it's because of their accents that it sounded like Diven or vice versa haha but Diven seems to be the majority on records. They were all labourers of plasterers. It was a small village back then with a port. I think it was the nearest place for immigrant to land in Scotland. They are all from just where the border of north and south Ireland is now.

Hi Gary Devine, sorry about not replying, I can't reply, I haven't been on this site for around 6 months, my initial reply has sparked an interest in my family tree on my mother's side. I've used findmypast.com to compile a family tree starting with my mother's mother Ailsa Craig Diven.
I'll compile a document with the information that I have about the Divens that migrated to Australia, I'll include names, birth, death, occupation info for deceased family members, but not for the living relatives, as most of my family don't know that I'm doing the family tree, and there are related Divens that my family have no contact with living in Australia. I'll do another post and attach a pdf of the document when finished. I'll work on it now, but it might take a few weeks.
Kind Regards
Jus B
