Title: Item in bequests stated in 1612 Will
Post by: Llanfihangel on Friday 19 July 24 01:20 BST (UK)
Hello All!

Please see if you can make out the wording of this item in Hugh ap Gwatkin's will of 1612 Gwenddwr, Braeconshire purchased from the Library of Wales yesterday. I have marked the item in the bequest with a couple of red lines attached..

Please help once again!!

Thanks!

Llanfi

I think it is literally the word “Item”, used as a header for each item in the will - although it looks like the ‘m’ was omitted.

I think Llanfi means the whole text of the item.  This is what it says:

I doe sete upon John ap

hugh my soone the some of xxs at ev(er)y feast of sainct michaell tharchangell from the year

of our lord god one thowsand sixe hundred & fourteene unto thomas ap hugh for and during

the whole Terme of eight yeares next ensing if he the said thomas shall happen to live

longe

ensing = there's no contraction mark but must mean ensuing

Has the word soe/so been cut from the end of the fourth line?

Does this bequest make sense?

Hello horselydown86,

Yes, that makes perfect sense and it is really helpful. Watkin ap Hugh is providing alms to Gwenddwr, Llangamarch, Altmawr and Llangynog, so his relatives might be spread over a fairly wide area. Thomas ap Hugh isn't referenced as a particular relative, although others are specifically identified as "eldest son" etc.

The search goes on...

Many thanks again to you and the others in this Forum

Cheers,

Llanfi  :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
