In the register for the burial ground of the Parish of Portsea I have the burial of
Elizabeth Audley on 15th July 1866 in the register she is described as “ the wife of (blank)” aged 47 of Providence Court Portsea the burial was undertaken by a Dissenting Minister and she was buried in an unconsecrated grave. (Note her age in the GRO indexes is given as 57. Ten years different from the burial record.
On the page of burials there are 7 burials in consecrated graves and 7 burials in unconsecrated graves. This is not something I have seen in other records
Why is described as “the wife of (blank)”?
Why are there so many unconsecratated burials in Portsea?
Was there something significant about Providence court in 1866?
I am trying to see if I can link her to the marriage in Q4 1963 between a Thomas Audley and Elizabeth Cole (GRO Portsea 2b 733) Are there any transcriptions of the marriage records at St Mary’s Portsea?
I have found on well known subscription websites a partial transcription which states that the marriage took place on 5th October 1863 and Thomas Audley was aged 49 and Elizabeth Cole was aged 51. Ideally I would like to know Thomas’s occupation as I am wondering if the above Thomas Audley marriage is Thomas’s second marriage the first being:
Q2 1856 Thomas Audley married Sarah McLean ( Portsea 2b 597) I know for this marriage Thomas Audley was a seaman RN and his father was George a Printer .ADM 139-213-21281 and ADM 139-238-32793 indicate that Thomas Audley was born in Gibraltar. But if this was Thomas’s first marriage I cannot find a death/burial for his first wife
In the 1861 census 637/71/35 Piece/folio/page there is a Thomas Audley at 3 Prescotts Court, Portsea and he is described as a Seaman born Gibraltar but his wife is recorded as Ellen Audley
Note some websites have transcribed the surname here as Andley instead of Audley’s
In the 1871 census 1131/37/27 there is a Thomas Ardley a Lodger and widow a Naval Pensioner born Gibraltar
There is then a burial of a Thomas Audley on 9th January 1880 at St Mary’s Portsea he was of Butcher Street and aged 66.
Can any body help me make sense of these records am I dealing with one, two, or three people called Thomas Audley.
The three Thomas Audley individuals could be
The first married Sarah McLean in 1856
The second was living with Ellen Audley in the 1861 census
The Third married Elizabeth Cole in 1863.
Thanks in anticipation of any help in sorting these people called Thomas Audley

Her death notice in The Portsmouth Times and Naval Gazette, 21 July 1866, gives her age as 47.
-
Her marriage cert is on FindMyPast. Couple of issues -
Status is transcribed as "spinster" - I see "widow". .
Father transcribed as "Robert Cole - laborer" - I see "Robert Atkins - laborer" (a witness is Eliza Atkins).
Her age is given as "51". Thomas is a Greenwich Pensioner.
-
FindMyPast has the baptism (image/transcript) of an Elizabeth Atkins, 25 Nov 1810, place St Mary, Portsea, parents Robert and Ann - father's occpn. not recorded in register.

Hi hanes teulu & Comberton
Many thanks for your replies
I was searching Find my Past for a marriage of Thomas Audley when it is actually recorded as Thomas Andely
So that sorts out that issue.
Any ideas where and when his first wife died and was buried she is Sarah McLean on the marriage certificate was she the recorded as Ellen Andley (Audley) in the 1861 census? Any thoughts
Regards

Elizabeth Cole married a Thomas Audley. It has been transcribed as Andely by FindMyPast - but it reads as "Audley" on the marriage cert.
Thomas Andley (quite clear on 61 Census - not to be confused with Audley) is aged 39.
So, who are you chasing - Thomas Audley age 49 at his marriage to Elizabeth Cole in 1863 or a Thomas Andley aged 39 on the '61 Census.
-
Hi Hanes teulu,
The Thomas Andley in the 1861 census is 59 years old and not 39 years old the horizontal bar of the 5 is between the rest of the 5 and the 9. Ancestry transcribe his age as 59
My surname is Audley and please believe every Andley is either an Audley or an Ardley.
in the 1861 census he is recorded as being born at Gibraltar (although mispelt)
In the 1871 census he is recorded as Ardley but the key thing in this census he is recorded as being born in Gibraltar
ADM 139-213-21281 and ADM 139-238-32793 Admiralty Records from the National Archive record a Thomas Audley being born in Gibraltar on 30th December 1814.
So I am convinced that Thomas Andley in the 1861 census is Thomas Audley aged 59 born Gibraltar.
In a previous reply you refer to the death notice of Elizabeth Audley in the "Portsmouth Times and Naval Gazette" does that notice give her husbands name?
Thanks for your help
-
No it doesn't give her husbands name
On the 9th instant at Providence Court Portsea, Mrs. Elizabeth Audley age 47.
-
Ancestry - transcription only
20 June 1856 St Mary's Portsea Hampshire
Thomas Audley age 41 to Sarah Mclean age 31
-
Ancestry - transcription only
5 October 1863 Thomas Audley age 49 to Elizabeth Cole age 51

The death record would seem to be the correct one.
Thomas was living on Butcher Street 1871 aged 57 widowed Naval Pensioner born Gibraltar.
Based on his reported birth date 1814 and his age (49) on the 1863 marriage, on the 1861 census he should be 47.
Perhaps Ellen didn't know how old he was.

Hi amondg,
Many thanks for all your additional information particularly about the Cole family.
However I am more interested in Thomas Audley.
The record I would now like to identify is where and when Sarah Audley (nee Mc Lean) died and was buried. Sarah Mc Lean being the first wife of Thomas Audley. They married in Portsea on 20th June 1856 and she must have died prior to 5th October 1863 when Thomas Audley married for a second time to Elizabeth Cole at Portsea and is described as a widower.
Many Regards

Get a copy of his death certificate and see who reported his death.
-
Sarah may not have died, if they separated, he waited seven years before remarrying.
Have you checked the Sarah Ann Adley who married Portsea 1869.
-
Hi amondg
Thanks for your last two messages.
I will get a copy of Thomas Audley's death certificate
I cannot find a copy on any website I have access to giving the details of the the marriage of Sarah Ann Adley in 1869
I will follow up both your suggestions
