Title: Alfred BUTTERS: Born 1834, North Yorkshire (?)
Post by: BAC3 on Tuesday 09 July 24 13:38 BST (UK)

Good Afternoon,

I posted the message below on an "old topic" this morning but have since thought it might be impractical.   Rather this fresh approach, but same message, would probably be more successful.   For the moment, thank you.

Re: Butters family Census look ups

I wonder if anyone who posted on this topic originally can offer advice/help/answers about an Alfred BUTTERS, born 1834/35, birthplace unknown, possibly North Riding, Yorkshire, parents unknown, brother John living in Carr Lane, Hull in 1850.   Not an easy request I know

Please be aware Alfred BUTTERS died in Portsmouth Prison of Pulmonary Consumption 26/09/1855.

Thank you

Are you searching with FindMyPast and/or Family Search?

If you search using surname Butter you'll get a possible baptism. Its also on FS.

Not seeing him in the 1841 census, but try looking for his employer (if it's mentioned in Alfred's criminal records on FindMyPast).

One of the records indicated it was his 2nd conviction. Perhaps he was in inmate in an institution in 1841.

Possible death for the father in 1836 in Hull.

The mother and several other siblings can be found in the 1841 census.

On the 30/12/1847 he registered as an apprentice in the Merchant Navy for a term of 8 years with a Thomas Halfyard of Ramsgate aboard the Mary Ann.

Sadly, I have no specific details of the crimes spoken about next and the FindMyPast Newspaper site was not helpful.   He was first tried at Kingston on Hull 07/04/1849 and sentenced to imprisonment for a month.   His second trial 29/12/1949 afterwards saw him "visiting" York Castle, Millbank and Parkhurst and finally Portsmouth Prison where he died on 26/09/1855.  There was also a summary offence about which I have no details.

He advised the authorities that he did not know where his parents were nor did he name them, only his brother John at Carr Street in Hull.   Neither do his records specify where he was born

Oh well, the c1837 Butter baptism I mentioned is a possibility. Baptism is on FS and FindMyPast.

Can I suggest for future searching and better results: omitting the "s" from a surname ending in "s". I think this has come up before with one of your requests.

Neither do his records specify where he was born

Not true. One of his British Merchant Seaman records gives his DOB and birth place (Hull).

I might be a bit slow on the uptake here but is it felt that his parents could be William & Mary.
