Were Peter's parents James Young and Alison Thompson. Another site has different parents for the Peter who married Agnes Lugton. thanks
-
Have you viewed his death registration to check what it says about his parents?
Is this his death in 1900?
PETER YOUNG
Age 71
Mother's maiden name THOMSON
1900
735 / 34
Duns, Berwickshire

When did Agnes Lugton die?
There are two deaths showing on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
AGNES YOUNG
Age 60
Mother's maiden name GILBURN
1897
727 / 14
Ayton, Berwickshire
or
AGNES YOUNG
Age 77
Mother's maiden name PURVES
1907
735 / 17
Duns, Berwickshire
Probably best to view his death registration to confirm details on SP.

Agnes's death in 1907 it seems.
From the National Probate Index (Calendar of Confirmations and Inventories), 1876-1936, it shows:
Name Agnes Lugton Young
Death Date 19 Apr 1907
Death Place Duns
Confirmation Date 26 Aug 1907
Confirmation Place Duns, Scotland
Her son, James Young living at Teviot Cottage, Duns is named as the executor to her will.

This looks to be either birth or christening details for the Peter you mention:
PETER YOUNG
Parents JAMES YOUNG/ALLISON THOMSON
07/09/1828
734 30 / 43
Cranshaws, Berwickshire
With mother's maiden name showing as Thomson on Peter's death registration, this looks a likely entry for Peter.
Five other entries for possible siblings with these parents showing in the Old Parish Registers on SP.

This looks like your YOUNG family in 1841 census

It looks as if James Young died in Stenton in 1863. Death certificate should give parents names. SP Index shows mother as "WOOD", but I wonder if this is his baptism …..
YOUNG JAMES Father - WILLIAM YOUNG 17/JUNE/1799 EAST BARNS ASSOCIATE
3 other children baptised in same church 1795 – 1804
(Certificates needed to confirm)
Marriage of parents?
YOUNG WILLIAM to ANN WATT (FR954) 06/06/1794 711 30 / 387 INNERWICK

1861 census for James Young infers he is still married, but no sign of his wife Alison after the 1851 census.
There is a likely death for her in 1855 Whittingehame (which is where they are living in 1851 census)
YOUNG ALISON 61 mother - PATTERSON F 1855 724 / 5 WHITTINGEHAME
THOMSON ALISON 61 mother - PATTERSON F 1855 724 / 5 WHITTINGEHAME
(Certificate needed to confirm)
Baptism for Alison Thompson?
THOMPSON ALISON
parents JAMES THOMPSON / JANET PATERSON (FR114)
02/08/1795 727 10 / 105 AYTON
(I would not be surprised to find the mother was actually "Margaret" Paterson - "Janet" being an error on the register?)

(I would not be surprised to find the mother was actually "Margaret" Paterson - "Janet" being an error on the register?) Is the only reason for this because she named her daughter Margaret too?

Thanks for all of this. Getting back to Peter Young he is 8 in 1841 but not there in 1851. Yes he was 18 in 1851 but his older sibs are still at home. I am beginning to think that my Peter is not the one who married Agnes Lugton in 1853 in Haddington East Lothian.

Have you looked at his death certificate to confirm his parents' names?

Hi,
I am a little confused. Who is your Peter Young?
As far as I can see for Peter Young who married Agnes Lurton, you have a pretty clear family as given by other contributors.
You say he is 8 in 1841 and 18 in 1851, but in fact if he is born in 1828 he is 22 or 23.
As far as I can see he is probably the Peter who is aged 22 in Duns in 1851.
As other contributors have said you only need to check a couple of records on SP to confirm all this.
The original records have a lot more information on than any transcripts and are essential for any research in Scotland.
Finally don’t rely on anyone else’s research, everyone makes mistakes, even the people filling in the forms!
Happy hunting
