Hello,
I am looking for information on the family of Nikolaus Nawrockyi who came to the UK around the 1940s from Ukraine. The family are apparently from Jasanice Silnau, Ukraine, however a Google search for this locality brings nothing up!
Nikolaus passed away in 2015 in Bradford, and his parents were Nikolaus and Anastasia nee Wolanski. Nikolaus senior died c1936.
I am wondering if anyone can help find where Jasanice Silnau is please?
Thanks,
-
The closest place names I can find are:
Jasienica is a village in southern Poland. It is located in the Silesian Foothills.
It's west of present day Ukraine.
NOTE: In the Interbellum (1918 to 1939) most of the territory of today's Western Ukraine belonged to the Second Polish Republic.

Thank you so much for the info, it would make sense because their surname is apparently a Polish surname.

Maybe?:
Jasienica Solna (Drohobycz), Galizien, Austria;
later Jasienica Solna (Drohobycz), Lwów, Poland;
now Yasenytsya-Sil'na, Drohobych, L′viv, Ukraine

My Father in Law Ostap Kabluckyj was born in Rogatyn / Rohatyn - Poland / Ukraine ...
there is an 11 mile stretch of the Western border of Ukraine / Poland - the ownership of this 11 mile stretch has changed hands about 6 times - Poland -Ukraine -Poland - Ukraine etc
regarding Nikolaus - what year was he born ??? the reason I ask is that during WW2 Russia had invaded the Ukraine and when the Germans were fighting the Russians - the German Army formed the 14th Wassen Grenadier -1st Galician - made up completely of UKRANIAN soldiers who wanted the Russians out of their country ( sound familiar ) - anyway - my father in law joined up and joined the Germans - the 14th Wassen was also sent to Italy - where my father in law was shot in the stomach and became a POW - - IN 1945/46 - 46,000 Ukranian POW Soldiers came to the Uk - most worked on farms to provide food ...
SO - in a nutshell Nikolaus probably came from the Galician part of Ukraine by the Polish border - and probably ??? fought with the 14th Wassen - and Ski / Kyj / Kyi - name wise means from the Valley . sadly my father in Law died aged 39 of stomach cancer caused by the shot in Italy .

www.ukraine.com may have info
good luck :)
ADDED I forgot to say - the spelling of Nikolaus SURNAME may not be correct - because if he WAS a POW - when they gave their names in the British Soldiers wrote their name down as THEY heard it - not as it was actually spelt -

Hello,
Thanks for the reply - having done some more research, it appears Nikolaus was born in Lviv so you were correct - again huge thanks :)

Hello,
Thank you so much for all this information.
Nikolaus was born 21st November 1921. His parents were Nikolaus and Anastasia (nee Wolanski). Their surname seems to be misspelled often. On his marriage register he was Nowrockyi, when he died in 2015 it was registered as Nawrockya and his father's surname was spelled Nawrockyj.
Apparently, Nikolaus said that all his family were killed by Nazis but that's all we know.
Thanks,
Colleen
