Title: No record of a death?
Post by: Anthony Roberts on Tuesday 02 July 24 14:40 BST (UK)
In Sennen Cove, Cornwall in 1876 one of my relatives Nanny Roberts daughter of Margaret "Peggy" Roberts and the late John, married one Sampson Nicholas, son of Sampson. The house the Roberts' lived in at the time was called Carlidja (or variations of) but I'm unsure if the newly married Nicholas' continued to live there.

By the time of the 1881 Census though, Sampson Jr. is deceased and Nanny is living in Carlidja as a widow with the Roberts'.

Thing is I can only find one adult Sampson/Samson Nicholas/Nicholls etc etc who died in Cornwall during this period, and he was 81. I mean it could be him, it would make an interesting tale for sure, but it's far more likely this is Sampson's father. So where is Sampson Jr? He vanishes from the records.

Also of note, there is a record of a Sampson Edwin Nicholas baptism on 19th May 1878

Samson Edwin c/o Samson (Decd) (Fisherman) & Nanny Nicholas of Sennen Cove

The infant was to die soon afterwards.

I've searched and searched but Nanny's husband remains elusive. Does anyone have any idea what could have happened to him?

As a fisherman he could have died at sea. The GRO has separate indexes for these

Several accounts in the papers around end June 1877
"Three fishermen drowned. A boat containing  John Nicholas, Sampson Nicholas and Edwin Sampson was returning to the Scilly Islands from fishing"
John Nicholas left a wife and 5 children.
Sampson left a widow and Edwin was unmarried.
The boat was caught in a squall and capsized off Zeam/Tean Sound.
Added  the boat hailed from Land's End

Thank you both, you went above and beyond, this helps fill in a gap in the family tree.

Edwin was Sampson's younger brother. It looks like John was a cousin.
It also looks possible that Nanny died in 1881 at the age of 31. What an absolute tragedy.

The 1881 death seems to be another Nanny.

I think the memorial inscription is just that, there was no burial in Sennen for Sampson.
Sampson Edwin was buried 5 Dec 1878 aged 9 months

A report of the accident a week later says that the bodies had not been recovered in that time.

Thank you. I've got no idea what happened to her then, she may have moved away and remarried. All the other deaths of a Nanny Nicholas don't seem to fit.
