Title: Two (identical) birth registrations for same people 20 years apart
Post by: AngelaR on Sunday 30 June 24 15:55 BST (UK)
I'm struggling with this one and hoping for some clues. I'm looking at people born in the mid 20th century (so I'm not giving names!). There are original index entries and then, about 20 years later, all at the same time, all these children have second entries. I'm trying to think of a reason for this but can't find one. The surnames and mother's maiden names are the same as the originals and the originals are marked up to indicate that there is a subsequent birth registration An example has the second entry referenced together with "0500/S" against it.

I'm only looking at these because I'm trying to trace back from them (because of DNA matches) and the parents are proving elusive. All suggestions gratefully received  ;D

Have you looked for a marriage of the parents just before the second entries  :-\

How many children does this pertain to?

I have an example where a couple married (many many years later) and re registered the birth of their son.

It could be they were unmarried at the time but pretended to be so on the original registrations then legally married before registering them again.

So as Rosie suggests is there a marriage for the parents names?

I'd tend to agree with Milliepede.  Let's hope in the first instance that AntonyMMM sees the post, as an ex-Deputy Registrar.  Otherwise, bite the bullet and purchase one of the second certificates.

Thank you so much for the kind replies! One of the problems I've had is that I can't find a marriage with the same father surname at any time. Also there were two children with the same father surname and different mother surnames who also were reregistered at the same time as the other second ones. A real conundrum!
As you say, I my have to get at least one of the certificates to give me some sort of clue byt it looks rather messy at the moment...

Sounds like re-registrations. These can be many years after the birth ( I have one done when the "child" was 47 years old), and the most common reason for that in the C20th would be after the later marriage of the parents, under the Legitimacy Act.

But there can be other reasons too - it is usually possibly to work out the most likely explanation by looking at the index entries, but knowing for certain needs copies of the entries (certificates)...both from the original registrations and the later re-registrations.

If you want a fuller answer you are welcome to send me the details via PM and I'll have a look at them for you.
