Post by: rodhill on Friday 28 June 24 06:41 BST (UK)
Can  anyone access a copy of the marriage of William Clissold to Mary Knight 2 Nov 1784 Painswick
to see if Mary was listed as a widow
Any assistance would be most appreciated

The Banns just say both bride and groom of this parish. Both signed their names.
Nothing to say if either were widow/er.

Witnesses were Jonathan Phipps and Robert Hinton if that helps at all. witnesses signed, bride and groom  made mark

There is a Mary Knight baptised in Painswick on 23 Feb 1757 d/o William and Hester.
Do you have Mary's burial record with age at death to see if that matches?

Just found image of parish record (looks like previous was BT, which implied Jonathan Phipps signed) JP made his mark, only Robert Hinton signed. he has also witnessed other marriages so probably parish clerk.

Witnesses ... signed, bride and groom made mark

Don't you find this strange? That the bride & groom signed the banns, but only made their marks at the actual wedding?

The Banns register image is available on Ancestry. This is a record completed by the vicar. The couple do not sign the Banns register. It is unlikely that they would ever see it.
