Hi
I have been trying to help a friend to download her tree (on Ancestry) to her desktop. We are having a problem with it. The instructions are saying go to 'save target as' to save the tree but we cannot see where this is. The only 'saveble' thing looks to be a link. Any ideas?
Many thanks

A GEDCOM file is a specialised text file.
What software will this be loaded into?
-
To Download your "tree" from Ancestry
Got to Tree Settings
Click on Export your tree
This generates a gedcom file which can be downloaded by clicking on "Download Gedcom file"
The file downloaded to your computer should have the same name as your tree on Ancestry e.g. rjpatontree.ged
As KGarrad says this Gedcom file although primarily a text file requires specialist software to display it in a similar form to that seen on Ancestry. There are a number of commercial and free programs available.

Thanks for the advice. I'll have another look. I am aware of the file format - I have software that she can install to read it.
Cheers

After the download, on Windows computers, with every browser I know, the .GED file should be in the Downloads folder.

Thank you for that. I'll tell her to look there for it :)
