I'm hoping someone can help me with the passenger list of the Nile which arrived in Durban on 25th September 1850 with just over 100 passengers brought out by John Lidgett.
Thank you

The S.S. Nile, an iron-hulled screw steamer, was built at Dumbarton in 1850. She was first operated by the Moss Line of Liverpool and inaugurated the line's Mediterranean service. In 1853 her ownership passed to James Stirling of Dublin and her operations to the British and Irish Steam Packet Company.
Registered at Liverpool during her service with the Moss Line.
24 crew and about 16 passengers.
Can't see a passenger list, but the Board of Trade destroyed most of the pre-1890 passenger lists.

This is the passenger list of The Nile. I photocopied it in Pietermaritzburg in 1980, I think in the Museum.
Cheers

Hello Mike
Thanks so much for this. I've been searching unsuccessfully for an original Nile passenger list for years. This page gives details of the last 39 of the 103 passengers. Do you perhaps have the early pages of the remaining 64 passengers. My great grandmother Susan Stonell came out on the Nile with her parents, brothers and sisters.
I see at the foot of the page that this list was compiled by James Jeffries Hodson of Caversham who was himself a passenger. He cautions that he compiled the list from The Mercury. His son Bernard Hodson married the daughter of Susan Stonell's sister Sarah.

Hello
I was given a list of early Natal settlers compiled by Christopher Bird for the Natal Witness. It lists the settlers on the Nile, but unfortunately only the family heads with no information on the other family members. I see there are names missing which appear on Hodson's list below. I'm more than happy to share it with you, but don't know how on this platform.

Neil the list you have is it a word document or a spreadsheet? You could take a photo and upload it here. I can help you.

The original was a Word Document which I imported into a spreadsheet so that I can sort more easily by ship's name.
Here is what comes up for the Nile.
I have noticed some spelling errors of names and ships which I've cleaned up. If you'd like the original document or the spreadsheet I can email it.
