Hi,
Does anyone know anything about the Man of War Inn, recently built in 1764, and then inhabited by Mark Magrath?
That's all the info I have

What is the context of your search for the pub or Mark Magrath?
Do you mean the pub was built in 1764 as ‘recently built…’ doesn’t make sense.
If you do a search for M M, there are sites with trees for Mark McGrath born about 1705 and died 1775. They have him married to Jane Hamilton.
What do you think?

The ‘recently built’ comes from a To Let ad 12 June 1764. Usual description of the building with a note saying it was recently built.
While it says Mark Magrath is living there it also gives an address of Mountrath Street Dublin for a James Magrath.
Also in the newspapers 5April 1781 a death in Cavan of Jane Magrath relict of Mark, it gives her age but I can’t read it, ?8.

Thanks for this. The advert in the paper I think said it was the Man of War pub in Cavan - so not the one at Balbriggan - unless the newspaper had it wrong as the dates are a bit of a coincidence.
However, the Mark Magrath who married Jane Hamilton/Hambleton is a possibility as to being the person inhabiting the Man of War. And that's what I'm curious about...
I have his family fairly well researched (but NOT whose parents Jane Hamilton were!). This Mark Magrath was an attorney, from a family of attorneys, so why the Man of War Inn business I wonder (if they are the same person).? Could it have been a simple business venture, what did the Inn mean/represent at that time? I see the Balbriggan Inn had the option of toll collection (an option for political control in turbulent times??).
I'm a long way from Cavan historically and geographically(!) so anything you can add I'd be glad of ;D

Worth noting the ad said in the Town of Cavan.
The only other thing I can see in the newspapers for a Mark Magrath Cavan is a horse available for stud in 1739.
The print in the old newspapers is very poor so there could be more the search isn't finding.
Have you got a date of death for Mark, maybe something obit wise could be found by browsing the papers. Might give a name from his wife's family.

Thanks, I do have that in Mark (Attorney)'s biography.
This was his obituary:
'At Cavan, Mark Magrath. Will refs to Wm, eldest son, daughter Deborah, son James, daughter Jane & husband Richard [Bolton]. Reported 24th Jan 1775 Reported 18th Jan in Saunders.
I have Mark (Attorney), his civic activities in Cavan, his father, quite a lot on siblings and his children. What is new/incognito is this issue of the Inn. He was an attorney from 1726, so what role the Inn had, if this was him, is really what's got me wondering.... He had a brother James and John - James definitely an attorney, John could be. ::)
Presumably that building in Cavan is long gone ....The family were COI and there was a lot going on in Cavan, so I guess if the Inn had a Toll function as per the Balbriggan version, it could have had different uses.

Have you looked through the registry of deeds?
I can see him in 1774 Magrath to Phillips but I was hoping to find a marriage settlement or the sale or lease of the Inn but not having any luck.
