Title: James Cummins
Post by: Woodford87 on Monday 17 June 24 16:14 BST (UK)
Hello, I wonder if anyone can offer any help how to find details about a lost relative. I am looking for a James Cummins also known as James Patrick Cummins or Jimmy Cummins. He was born on 24th February 1899 in Ardee Street to Luke and Mary nee McNally. I can find him in the 1901 and 1911 census. He appears to have fought in WW1 and survived. I know he was in Dublin in 1930 and probably in Liverpool in 1937. Then the trail runs cold. No one can locate him after this date. My relatives and I have searched the various Irish Genealogy sites, Ancestry, Find My Past and Family Search but nothing gives us any clue to his life after 1937. I would appreciate any suggestions about where I could find more details about him. Thanks.

I note on https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie that there is more that one death in Dublin and maybe more elsewhere for the name born about 1899. If you have more information on him, such as married or not or relatives names it might be worth a look.

Hello, Many thanks for your replies and help. All of your suggestions have been researched and unfortunately, found not to be our James. Because we cannot find a marriage or death record which confirms the details we know, we are stuck. We have found some relatives in the records but they do not give any clue or a link to James' life.

Has OP looked under Cowman, which is the same/equivalent name as Cummins/Cummings?

If he lived past 75 or so the death won't be on irishgenealogy yet.
Do you have any family members to do a newspaper death search?

His mother died in 1935. Perhaps newspaper reports who attended funeral.

His father died in 1949

Many thanks for your help. I don't think we had his mother's death details. It's sad she was in a workhouse.
We think we found James's death record in London in 1990. He had been listed as Cummings. The suggestion for the alternative spellings is useful. Tried Cummings/Cumins/Commons and variations but not Cowmans. It's something we will research.

Thank you for the information. It sounds like it was a terrifying place.

It's sad she was in a workhouse.

I know it says "Workhouse" on the death registration, but that must be anachronistic.
Most workhouses were abolished in Ireland in the 1920s, and the only remaining ones - in Dublin - in 1931. The former workhouses were converted into hospitals, or county homes.

So, I would say she actually died in hospital, located in the former workhouse buildings.
