Title: public house in Padgate
Post by: organicgardener on Monday 10 June 24 01:50 BST (UK)
I wanted to find the landlord of the Stocks public house in Padgate Lancashire on the census forms. I believe the original pub was at the end of Green Lane Padgate nr Warrington Lancashire. The newer Stocks pubs (2) were on Station road Padgate. I was told my ancestor might have been the landlord of one of them. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you. Chris Watters

I can't see a public house on Green Lane on old maps, only on Padgate Rd.

Also, a notice of deceased estate of James PAUL, publican, late of Stocks Inn, Padgate in Jan 1871.

Another advertisement for the sale of the Stocks Inn, Padgate ("almost opposite Padgate Church") in 1875.

James PAUL (44, born Culcheth) lic victualler and family are on the 1861 census at Padgate Stocks, Poulton with Fearnhead.

Thanks so much one of my ancestors was Henry Daintith so that could be him as my family came from Croft.                          There is a Henry DAINLETH  26 lic victualler at Stocks Inn Padgate Rd (born Croft) and family in 1891. Quite a few of the census have spelling mistakes in them so I will investigate further.

There were supposed to be two pubs one on the end of Green lane (where I lived) just near the bridge and where Monks and Trollops were, they were reported for bear baiting ! apparently. I only remember the one pub on station road opposite the church. I never knew my ancestors were publicans either as my grans family were tee total. Doing my family history has been amazing as they started off as silk weavers then porter and ale brewers then publicans.

Further to reply #3, from the tiithe map for Poulton with Fearnhead 1841.

There is a public house marked at the position of the Padgate Stocks PH that is shown on old OS maps at the south end of Padgate Road (now Station Road S)
landowner: George Hatton
occupier: James Paul

The plot adjoining immediately to the north, more or less opposite the chapel is 'Malt Kiln and Garden'
landowner: William Hatton
occupier: George Hatton

An older map (1845) showing Maltkiln Farm. And Padgate Stocks Inn seems to be on the other side of the road now.

#9 The position of that Padgate Stocks Inn matches up with the 1841 tithe map PH very well, on that bend.

It's amazing how all those years ago and what we can find now. Thanks so much.

Hi,

I was researching a Licensed Victualler, William IRONMONGER, a few years ago and viewed some fascinating documents from the 1820s and 1830s at Lancashire Records Office. I was looking at pubs in Newton-le-Willows and Haydock, but I'm wondering if Lancashire Records Office would hold similar documents for inns/pubs in Padgate.

I was viewing documents that related to "Licenses and recognizances: The Alehouse Act 1552." This act directed that alehouse keepers be licensed by local justices of the peace. You would be able to look for your ancestor in quarter sessions records up to 1888. These quarter sessions records are found at the relevant county record office.

I read a document that my ancestor had to sign that related to bear fighting. I mention this because of your ancestor being reported for bear baiting.

Best wishes, Rowan  :)

I found the attached newspaper clipping in a Warrington paper called The Examiner. Date; 09/06/1894.

It sounds like your guy  :)

Another newspaper clipping. This one from The Northwich Guardian, 05/10/1872.

It mentions Thomas DAINTETH, Padgate Stocks.
