Hi,
Kathrine Miller b. 1865 Houghton le Spring, married to Thomas Miller b. 1858 Hart, Co. Durham.
I've got her on later census when married but can't find trace of her before that. A possible marriage in 1884 in Easington but I'm not sure. Family source, a long time ago, said that at least one of her parents was from Ireland.

Do you have details of any children for this couple?
If so then search births on
https://www.gro.gov.uk/. as the index there will give MMN prior to 1911

The Catherine Curran/ Thomas Miller marriage can be found on Durham Records Online. A free search gives the abode as Sheraton. A full transcript costing £3 should give father's name and names of witnesses.

Following Thomas Miller back is straight forward, Catherine another matter, It's a must for the marriage certificate to determine father's name and occupation.

I have a subscription at DRO so was able to look at the 1884 wedding with Thomas Miller. Based on the information there, which I can't post (it is definitely worth seeing), I think the Curran family in 1871 is in Shotton:
RD Easington
ED 7
piece 4972
folio 48
or search in the 1871 for Catherine Curran, dob 1860, place of birth Newbottle and living in Shotton, to find the family that I am referring to.
-
AlanBoyd, based on your post then the following is probable.
1861 census ref --Transcribed on Anc as Currin
Piece 3753
Folio 11
Page number 15
Births
CUMMIN, ANN SIMPSON

CUMMINGS, JOHN TURNER mmn SIMPSON
GRO Reference: 1854 S Quarter in HOUGHTON LE SPRING Volume 10A Page 281
Cannot find Catherine though, she is aged 4 on the 1861 census.

1881 census ref 4966 94 14, Transcribed in FindMyPast as Carrew for parents James & Ann plus siblings but no Catherine.
1891 census ref for parents 4106 122 28--does give exact pob's for parents.

@reply #8
Agree, that looks like the same family in 1861. Catherine was 11 in 1881, so a bit of a discrepancy there, but pob still Newbottle. Some of the children have been mistranscribed as ‘visitor’, but eg Catherine looks like “Dt’ to me.
The eldest son Thomas was born in Doddington, Northumberland (near Wooler) so presumably that is where the story begins.

Hi, thank you all for your help and advice. I've got Catherine Curran's marriage cert. very interesting and useful.
AlanBoyd, are you sure it's Doddington? On the 1871 census it looks like there are two i's. Dissington? Dinnington?
-
Rippedflesh69, now you have seen and purchased the marriage certificate could you please share the details, fathers names, occupations, addresses and witnesses. Thanks

I have amended my post #8 re births. In reviewing the 1881/91 census re John Curran it appears he was born c1857 in Houghton although his age is 13 in 1871 and aged 6 in 1861
1881 John aged 24
1891 John aged 34
Based on those dates it's possible this is his birth.
