Title: Trying to order digital death certificate from GRO
Post by: Steve C on Tuesday 04 June 24 23:55 BST (UK)
Just wondering whether anyone else has experienced a similar issue as me.

I would like to order a digital copy of a death certificate for 1970. I do not use the GRO website on a regular basis and my last downloads were 4 digital certificates costing £10 sometime shortly after the New Year.

I have tried this evening to obtain a digital certificate but the drop down box jumps from the year 1957 to 1984 ( screenshot attached ).

Just curious, anyone else had problems.

Many thanks Steve

Digital and PDF death registration images are only available up to 1957. For the missing years on the GRO you will need to have found the reference details from elsewhere. Choose place an order.
Prices have just gone up.

If you don't  have the reference details, you can still order with an additional cost.

I believe any deaths from Jan 1958 onwards have to be sent off for, the old fashioned way. Same for 1924 onward births. And any 1837 onwards marriages. I am glad though we can download a copy of any registered 1837-1957 deaths and any registered 1837-1923 birth in seconds now for £3 each.

Thankyou for your reply.

Yes I assumed I would have to apply for a certificate "The old fashioned way" but there are other ancestors already in the queue!

I did order 4 digital certificates around New Year time and it was very handy/pleasing to have instant access to long anticipated family information  ;)

I just tried to order one that is within the date limits they say they have, It is for 1886. I got this:

Image not currently available for this entry, the record may alternatively be ordered as a Certificate or PDF, please refer to the FAQ's.

It should be there and if it can be bought as a PDF why not digital snippet?

Any clues? Is it worth waiting?

I suspect that someone else had ordered the digitised record and it was one of those which had been scanned 'skew-whiff' and some of the info was missing.
In which case they probably reported it got a refund and the image was removed from the digitised database.

Same for 1924 onward births.

GRO says
The following can be ordered through our GRO online ordering service...
Online View digital image for...birth entries from 1837 up to 100 years ago

But still waiting for 1924 births to become available as digital images. Hopefully not long!

Yes I tried the other day. You can still order a PDF for births up to 1934 I think.

Also not forgetting many births in Nov and Dec 1924 were registered in Jan, Feb 1925, so when 1924 becomes available for digital downloads, anyone born in Dec 1924 but registered in Jan 1925 will have to be ordered via the old way or through a PDF for another year I assume.

I am quite fascinated by the civil registration system and the 6 weeks usually allowed for birth registrations and 5 days for deaths. I have 2 deaths of ancestors in 1929 and 1947, registered in the first quarter of the 2 years, but when I got the certs, they died on the very last day of 1928 and 1946. Registered 2nd Jan 1929 and 3rd Jan 1947.

1929 and 1947 did see harsh winters for the UK but the deaths were nothing to do with them I think.
