Title: Polly Donkin
Post by: aspin on Sunday 02 June 24 16:06 BST (UK)
Does anyone know if there is a history story  of Polly Donkin from Cullercoats
I'm having a clearing out of things I no longer use and come across a photo in my family photos
from the Newcastle area
Polly I think has been a post card and someone has copied this off .She has what I think fish baskets one on her back and one on her arm
Just wondered who she was she is not a relative of mine

Aspin, she is a notable and much respected person in these parts. :)

I have added her Whitley Bay Cemetery burial to Find a Grave.
I daresay North Shields local studies might be interested to hear of your photo.

Boo, what a cracking find! :D

Thanks for letting us see the photo, Elizabeth. This is kind of you to show this.   :) I do recall seeing an article once which related that Polly was sadly robbed once when she was going around at Newcastle selling her fish! :o
I have also seen a much older photo of a frailer looking Polly in an newspaper article.  As I recall it was related she was housebound (bedbound I think) at that point and had had one of her legs amputated.  I think it was the Whitley Seaside Chronicle, which was a fabulous newspaper.  I do wish that one was online - it was brilliant for photos and articles about local people.

There are copies of the postcard available on eBay, which is where I got this image from.

Boo, what a cracking find! :D

There's all sorts of good stuff in the British Pathé Archives, just sat, sitting there ready to be found :-)
I loved her comment regarding meeting the Prince of Wales,'He's a nice canny lad and I've no need to be frightened of him."

Hello I have just spotted this chat and would like to share a photo of Polly Donkin with my Grandfather Martin Henderson in Cullercoats. Both serious about raising money for charity. I also have a letter from her grand daughter written to my brother in 1997.
I do not know how to attach a photo at this time.
