Title: Pontypridd Central Homes
Post by: adicol on Saturday 18 May 24 20:02 BST (UK)
Hello,

I am wondering if anyone can advise where I can find any information/records for the Central Homes in Pontypridd.

I believe my grandfather was placed in the homes in May 1923 at the age of 6 by the NSPCC, after he and his 11 year-old step-sister were found to be being neglected. I am unable to travel to the Glamorgan Archives to view their records, so wondered where else I may be able to find anything.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated,

Colleen

Click on records on 1st link

https://workhouses.org.uk/Pontypridd/

Also

https://archiveshub.jisc.ac.uk/search/archives/995b6e3a-355b-3c8e-b6fa-aebe2eb85b10

Likely a fee for record search

Have you tried searching for them? Some records are online.

Hi,

Thanks for the links - I have already checked these and also the National Archives too but sadly none are online.

Annoyingly, I am in Cardiff from Friday-Sunday at the end of the month but the Glamorgan Archives are only open Tuesday-Thursday. I was hoping I may be able to find them elsewhere.

Kind regards,

Colleen

I don’t think you’ll find anything online as the records are likely closed for 100 years and would be restricted viewing even at the archives. The staff there are extremely helpful and would let you know if they are available, and what charges would apply for them to search for you.

Can I suggest searching for newspaper reports. You might find a mention of the children being taken into care, along with the circumstances. Child neglect cases were reported quite often, back in the day.

Is this the family in question?

Here's the bottom half of the report...

Hello,

Thanks for the replies. This is the correct family in the news report - this was how I discovered he was put into care. We did have our suspicions but hadn't been able to find any records to corroborate it but they are also in the 1921 census with John and his biological daughter Katie.

I will give the Archives a call tomorrow to see what they can do to help.

Kind regards,

Colleen
