Title: Thomas Branston 1849 Cape Colony
Post by: Coops-158 on Sunday 12 May 24 15:22 BST (UK)
Hi

I have a conundrum in my family tree, one of my ancestors was born in George Cape Colony in 1849, his name is Thomas Branston. I cannot find any confirmation of his parents. He features in the UK censuses from 1871 so returned to the UK at some point. I cannot find a record of this either. Could someone assist me please. Thanks

I found this. NAB is a archive in Pietermaritzburg Natal. I will look on Familysearch tomorrow to see if I can find this file online.

Hi

Thank you for looking, I believe his father John Branston circa 1821 and his mother Catherine sailed to South Africa in 1848 on the Caramondel. I don't know if they returned or what happened to them in S.Africa but Thomas was born in 1849 and shows back in UK in 1871. Thanks again

Do you have the marriage certificate for Thomas Branston assuming he married Sarah Glossop
1871 Nottinghamshire ?. If so does it mention fathers name and occupation witnesses maybe related to him .As far as I know the U K incoming lists are only available from 1878

Hi

Sorry I cannot recall as I did not screenshot it. I will try and locate it again. Neither John Branston or Catharine nee Spiby feature in any census that I can find. They did sail from Plymouth in 1848 to South Africa

If you are looking for a birth in South Africa in 1849 - then you need to look at church records. What denomination were they most likely members of? He does not appear in the Baptisms in the Anglican church in George. If they were methodist you will probably need to contact the Cory Library in Grahamstown to do a look up. Catholic records you need to contact the Catholic diocese directly.
