Hi,
I am trying to trace a great uncle Peter Joseph Daly born 1906 Clondalkin, Dublin.
Family folklore is that he emigrated to Melbourne and worked with horses.
His father was Peter Joseph (1872>1954), his mother Bridget Reilly (1882>C 1913)
I have spent hours trying to track him to no avail and any help or suggestions would be greatly welcomed

Hello kevingd and welcome to RootsChat.
Victorian births, deaths and marriages are free to search online:
https://www.bdm.vic.gov.au/research-and-family-history/search-your-family-history
There is a death for a Peter Joseph DALY registered at Kyneton, Vic in 1978 aged 72. Unfortunately there are no parent's names recorded on the index which usually means that there may not much information available on the actual certificate. Hard to know what information the informant had unless you purchase the certificate.
You have also posted on the Resources and Offers Board, I'll ask a moderator to move this thread to the general Australia Board. :D

Hi, have you any clues on when he travelled to Australia, any stories of him marrying, wife's or children's names.
Any tiny bit of information might help in
finding him.
regards
Cass

Hi,
This is a bit complex, but here goes ;D
A chap named Peter Joseph DALY enlisted in WW2
You can see this file
https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/ Search as a guest and enter the full name see digitised documents.
Wrong details (differing from your details given) are his birthdate, his exact place of birth in Ireland.
Right in accordance with your post, horse worker, a stud groom.
His NOK is listed as wife Annie who lives at 3 Palermo Street Mentone.
The record details an accident in Melbourne while on duty in 1942 which fractured his leg severely and he was discharged.
ALSO in the file is a letter from Norfolk from a person searching for one of that name for family reasons. Signed P E DALY. Searching for "my uncle"
It is dated1998.
The details given of the chap being sought in the letter are
Left UK in 1920's
An address "The Nook" Stud , Nagambie
Wife- Mignon
Daughter- *N......... (edited as I cannot state deceased.)
That he was injured in New Guinea Port Morsby in 1942
A look at the Vic Electoral Roll finds.
1967
DALY, ANNIE MIGNON 3 Palermo Street Mentone
DALY * N.......... (edited as I cannot state deceased.) 3 Palermo Street Mentone.
From 1962 to 1968
DALY, Peter Joseph "Hollywood" Tilden Rd. Park Manager
No others with him of the name.
* Identical

Those details fit with a marriage I saw on Vic BDM for Peter Joseph DALY and
Annie Mignon Mary MEREDITH. Not on my computer atm, so can't check the details or year, though the certificate should show his father's name.

this looks like Mignon's Grave on Find a Grave

ps Sparrett great find on Army records

;D ;D
Yes, I see the marriage now.
Reg 14019/1936
His record gives the exact marriage date 10th Dec 1936
I feel the file has many missing pages. A summary document shows service abroard but there is no paperwork about it.

For interest, 3 Palermo St Mentone seems to be Annie's brother's home. Her brother Edward Spencer MEREDITH, a jockey died in 1936 and family notices have this address. eg
https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/11034193 (1st column, near the middle)
So possibly Peter Joseph and Annie Mignon did not stay together long. I can see her on the 1949 electoral roll at that address.
-
this this is Annie Mignon Merediths father's army record WW1
MEREDITH Edward Spencer : Service Number - 4752 : Place of Birth - St Helena South Africa : Place of Enlistment - Melbourne VIC : Next of Kin - (Wife) MEREDITH Annie
follow Sue's previous instruction to read file

So ;D probably neither of those ,
Looks most likely so far the one Maddy found at Kyneton in 1978.
The E roll entries for him stop around then too.

Many, many thanks to all that have spent some of their valuable time helping a pomme they don’t know
From the info provided it looks like sparrett has hit the nail on the head
I have checked Irish birth records & non are listed for a Peter (Joseph) Daly on 15 Mar 1910
The letter in the military records from PE Daly I am 99% sure is from an uncle (for some reason he & my father become estranged) & I have never had any real contact with his children, even though I have tried to contact them in the last few years.
I will now look to confirm the info & to trace the grandchildren etc of Peter & Annie & hopefully make contact
Again many thanks, all your help is much appreciated by myself and the wider Daly branch that we are part of
Best wishes
Kevin Daly

Good to have a satisfactory result. ;D
I understand the letter in the file to say that the missing man is P. E. Daly,s uncle. Is P. E. still living?
Finding living people in Australia (the grandchildren of Peter Joseph you mention) is not always easy due to the strict privacy laws in place. Certainly worth trying though.
It may help that there are some not so common names involved.
