Title: Broughton Sulney mariage 1847: Faulks, Powl
Post by: IanStB on Sunday 05 May 24 14:09 BST (UK)
My ancestors George Faulk and Ann Powl were married in the Parish Church at Broughton Sulney 24 July 1847, by Banns. I have the marriage certificate from GRO on which George's father's name is not only blank but the space is scored through. My working hypothesis is that he was illegitimate but there may be another explanation.

I hope that more information might survive in the Parish records but they don't appear to be online for 1847.

Does anyone have access to the 1847 marriage register (or can tell me where it is?) Alternatively, although the church was in Nottinghamshire, it was in the Diocese of Lincoln: would there be duplicates at a diocesan level?

Thanks.

Lack of fathers name on a marriage certificate does normally suggest illegitimacy.  Do the witnesses names give any clues.

Presumably he is the George Faulkes age 29 bn Hickling - living in Hicking in 1851 with wife Ann and children John 4 and Elizabeth 1

Thanks - no the witnesses don't help, unfortunately.

Yes, that's the family and Elizabeth is my ancestor. She's causes me more problems later in her life, but that's another story :-)

Can you locate him in 1841 to see who he was living with?

Or find a baptism record naming a parent or parents.

There was a George Fawkes baptised 9 Jun 1822 Hickling with parents John & Ann.

I have an instance where a chap remarried and first marriage named a father but the second one didn't so there can be other explanations as you say.

I would try and trace this George just in case and yours did have a son John.

Yes, there are one or two potentials, but pinning him down is the problem. I have no idea, for example, what surname he might have been baptised under - my experience is that it is generally the mother's name unless the clergy are being particularly pointed about the reputed father, and I don't know the mothers name for sure.

I say I don't know 'for sure' because Ancestry throws up a DNA match for me with descendants of a woman who was married to someone else at the time and continued to be married to them for some time afterwards. That could also have other interpretations, but it adds uncertainty into the mix. I don't know, for example, if he was actually baptised.

Although unlikely, I'm exploring every avenue I can in case, for example, clergy have added a marginal note anywhere.

Yes you are right it would generally be under the mothers surname if she was a spinster.

Tricky because by 1841 he could have been out on his own somewhere.
