I have tried to order a £2.50 death certificate today, using my usual card but keep getting 'Cardholder Validation failed' notice. Have used same card before without issues. Is anyone else having a problem? Have tried re entering details and a different card but no luck. Any advice please.

GRO kept throwing up that error for me last week, I just left it until a couple of hours later and tried again, it still failed.
Next day it was OK and the order went through.

Phew, not just me then! I've been having the GRO ordering return "cardholder validation failed" via WorldPay for a couple of weeks now. Tried 4 different cards. Double, and triple-checked the details entered.

Yes. I have had that issue too.
Each time it worked on the second attempt.

Thank you for replying. I have tried again this morning to complete the order but the message is still the same. Now I know it isn't just me, I will wait a while longer and keep trying.
Thanks again

I get that sometimes when I've made a number of single certificate purchases in a short time so I just switch to another card. Always works with the second card and the original card is OK again in a few days.

You are definitely ordering a death cert in the timeframe that is available in the £2.50 band?
Digital Images are only available for Births 1837-1923 and Deaths 1837-1957.

And not all pages within those year ranges are available. I have tried ordering several images from the 1840s

If the OP gets through to the payment screen I would assume that the digital image is available and it's a payment issue.

I have a vague recollection of something similar with the Probate site a few months back, the problem I think was something to do with one of the payment fields being pre-populated with a space which needed to be deleted before entering anything.

Thanks again for your hints and tips to solve this issue. The death certificate I am trying to get is for Benjamin Parkin for 1870. I am hoping it is my gt gt grandfather and that the informants name will tie in with his wife's (Ann) or another family member.
I got the information from Free BMD - district Barnsley, ref 9C 117 - and the system seems ok with that, the correct information comes up in my 'basket' but, I just cannot get the payment accepted, same message. I have tried again this afternoon with no luck.
Maybe it's trying to tell me I have the wrong person!

Try a different debit or credit card.

I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago but persevered and it eventually worked. A few days later tried again and could get nowhere so sent a message to GRO, I am still waiting for a reply. I then tried changing my address slightly thinking that perhaps my bank had carried out an update and it did not like how my address showed on GRO, that seemed to make a difference. However seeing that other people are having the same issue it was probably just a coincidence that I managed to succeed.

Thank you for all the replies. I deleted the original order for the 1870 death for Benjamin Parkin having found information online suggesting a death in 1864 was more likely. ( I had options between his daughters birth in 1864 and the 1871 census, when his wife is a widow).
My first attempt, with the original bank card, came up with the same message of 'cardholder validation failed' so I clicked on the ends of the address boxes, which were already filled in from my login and have now been successful in ordering this 1864 certificate.
It seems to be the person I was looking for. Just need to find out who Thomas Parkin, the informant, is now.
Hope this may help someone else if they get any problems.
Thanks again
