Title: George Moir House
Post by: MT_WilkB on Friday 26 April 24 17:44 BST (UK)
Hello, I'm looking for a location of my 4th great grandfathers house (George Moir 1784-1855) in Perthshire Scotland. A picture of the house is attached. The only information I have is it might be near Bochastle, Callander and Ben Ledi. My sister was able to visit the house several years ago but doesn't remember the exact location. I'm traveling to Scotland this summer and would like to see if the house is still standing.
Thanks for any help.

Welcome to RootsChat :)

When you say it is your 4th-great-grandfather's house, did he actually live permanently in it? What else do you know about him - parents' names, where he was born, his occupation, where he died, whom he married? That might help to find him in a census which would make it easier to pinpoint where the house is (or was).

Thanks this is a really neat forum.
From my research;
George Moir was born in Thornhill Perthshire August 22, 1784 and married Jane Sterling August  20, 1815. George is the son of George Moir and Janet Adam.

George and Jane lived in Callander which is where the house is located.  They later moved to Canada.

My sister confirmed that the house was in Callander but doesn't recall the exact location.  She said it was on a walking path.

Thanks for the response.

Welcome from me too

You have posted on the Perth board. There are 2 George Moir deaths in 1855 - neither in Perth.  Callander & Ben Ledi are in Stirling

The only 1851 entry I can see was living in Kincardine

I think this is an historic aerial view - https://canmore.org.uk/collection/1699926 one of several of the area.

The house seems to be part of a farm just to the west of Callander, below the A85 and to the east of the A821, called Bochastle.

Callander & Ben Ledi are in Stirling
They are in the area now (since 1975) administered by Stirling Council.

Historically they are in the County of Perth aka Perthshire. See https://maps.nls.uk/view/74400315 and https://stataccscot.edina.ac.uk/static/statacc/dist/parish/Perth/Callander

This https://portal.historicenvironment.scot/designation/LB50395 is the Listed Building record for Bochastle Farm.

Thank you everyone for all the information.
idmmdi you are correct on the location.  I was able to confirm with my sister as well as help from the Callander Heritage Society. I'm looking forward to seeing the area in my travels this summer.
